1And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Petephres the eunuch of Pharao, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ismaelites, who brought him down thither.
1Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites that had brought him down there.
2And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house with his lord the Egyptian.
2Yahweh was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man. He was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3And his master knew that the Lord was with him, and the Lord prospers in his hands whatsoever he happens to do.
3His master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that Yahweh made all that he did prosper in his hand.
4And Joseph found grace in the presence of his lord, and was well-pleasing to him; and he set him over his house, and all that he had he gave into the hand of Joseph.
4Joseph found favor in his sight. He ministered to him, and Potiphar made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5And it came to pass after that he was set over his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptianfor Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all his possessions in the house, and in his field.
5From the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake. Yahweh’s blessing was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.
6And he committed all that he had into the hands of Joseph; and he knew not of anything that belonged to him, save the bread which he himself ate. And Joseph was handsome in form, and exceedingly beautiful in countenance.
6He left all that he had in Joseph’s hand. He didn’t concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Joseph was well-built and handsome.
7And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and said, Lie with me.
7After these things, his master’s wife set her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.”
8But he would not; but said to his master's wife, If because of me my master knows nothing in his house, and has given into my hands all things that belong to him:
8But he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, my master doesn’t know what is with me in the house, and he has put all that he has into my hand.
9and in this house there is nothing above me, nor has anything been kept back from me, but thou, because thou art his wife—how then shall I do this wicked thing, and sin against God?
9No one is greater in this house than I am, and he has not kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
10And when she talked with Joseph day by day, and he hearkened not to herto sleep with her, so as to be with her,
10As she spoke to Joseph day by day, he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
11it came to pass on a certain day, that Joseph went into the house to do his business, and there was no one of the household within.
11About this time, he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside.
12And she caught hold of him by his clothes, and said, Lie with me; and having left his clothes in her hands, he fled, and went forth.
12She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside.
13And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his clothes in her hands, and fled, and gone forth,
13When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run outside,
14that she called those that were in the house, and spoke to them, saying, See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew servant to mock us—he came in to me, saying, Lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice.
14she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, “Behold, he has brought a Hebrew in to us to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice.
15And when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, having left his clothes with me, he fled, and went forth out.
15When he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment by me, and ran outside.”
16So she leaves the clothes by her, until the master came to his house.
16She laid up his garment by her, until his master came home.
17And she spoke to him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, whom thou broughtest in to us, came in to me to mock me, and said to me, I will lie with thee.
17She spoke to him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought to us, came in to me to mock me,
18And when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, having left his clothes with me, he fled and departed forth.
18and as I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment by me, and ran outside.”
19And it came to pass, when his master heard all the words of his wife, that she spoke to him, saying, Thus did thy servant to me, that he was very angry.
19When his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” his wrath was kindled.
20And his master took Joseph, and cast him into the prison, into the place where the king's prisoners are kept, there in the prison.
20Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound, and he was there in custody.
21And the Lord was with Joseph, and poured down mercy upon him; and he gave him favour in the sight of the chief keeper of the prison.
21But Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
22And the chief keeper of the prison gave the prison into the hand of Joseph, and all the prisoners as many as were in the prison; and all things whatsoever they do there, he did them.
22The keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever they did there, he was responsible for it.
23Because of him the chief keeper of the prison knew nothing, for all things were in the hand of Joseph, because the Lord was with him; and whatever things he did, the Lord made them to prosper in his hands.
23The keeper of the prison didn’t look after anything that was under his hand, because Yahweh was with him; and that which he did, Yahweh made it prosper.
1And it came to pass after these things, that the chief cupbearer of the king of Egypt and the chief baker trespassed against their lordthe king of Egypt.
1After these things, the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt.
2And Pharao was wroth with his two eunuchs, with his chief cupbearer, and with his chief baker.
2Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cup bearer and the chief baker.
3And he put them in ward, into the prison, into the place whereinto Joseph had been led.
3He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.
4And the chief keeper of the prison committed them to Joseph, and he stood by them; and they were [some] days in the prison .
4The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he took care of them. They stayed in prison many days.
5And they both had a dreamin one night; and the vision of the dream of the chief cupbearer and chief baker, who belonged to the king of Egypt, who were in the prison, was this.
5They both dreamed a dream, each man his dream, in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the cup bearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison.
6Joseph went in to them in the morning, and saw them, and they had been troubled.
6Joseph came in to them in the morning, and saw them, and saw that they were sad.
7And he asked the eunuchs of Pharao who were with him in the prison with his master, saying, Why is it that your countenances are sad to-day?
7He asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?”
8And they said to him, We have seen a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said to them, Is not the interpretation of them through God? tell [them] then to me.
8They said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it.” Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me.”
9And the chief cupbearer related his dream to Joseph, and said , In my dreama vine was before me.
9The chief cup bearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “In my dream, behold, a vine was in front of me,
10And in the vine [were] three stems; and it budding shot forth blossoms; the clusters of grapes were ripe .
10and in the vine were three branches. It was as though it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters produced ripe grapes.
11And the cup of Pharao was in my hand; and I took the bunch of grapes, and squeezed it into the cup, and gave the cup into Pharao's hand.
11Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.”
12And Joseph said to him, This is the interpretation of it. The three stems are three days.
12Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days.
13Yet three days and Pharao shall remember thy office, and he shall restore thee to thy place of chief cupbearer, and thou shalt give the cup of Pharao into his hand, according to thy former high place, as thou wast wont to be cupbearer.
13Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office. You will give Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, the way you did when you were his cup bearer.
14But remember me of thyself, when it shall be well with thee, and thou shalt deal mercifully with me, and thou shalt make mention of me to Pharao, and thou shalt bring me forth out of this dungeon.
14But remember me when it is well with you. Please show kindness to me, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house.
15For surely I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here I have done nothing, but they have cast me into this pit.
15For indeed, I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.”
16And the chief baker saw that he interpreted aright; and he said to Joseph, I also saw a dream, and methought I took up on my head three baskets of mealy food.
16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also was in my dream, and behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head.
17And in the upper basket there was the work of the baker of every kind which Pharao eats; and the fowls of the air ate them out of the basket that was on my head.
17In the uppermost basket there were all kinds of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.”
18And Joseph answered and said to him, This is the interpretation of it; The three baskets are three days.
18Joseph answered, “This is its interpretation. The three baskets are three days.
19Yet three days, and Pharao shall take away thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree, and the birds of the sky shall eat thy flesh from off thee.
19Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you, and will hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from off you.”
20And it came to pass on the third day that it was Pharao's birth-day, and he made a banquet for all his servants, and he remembered the office of the cupbearer and the office of the baker in the midst of his servants.
20On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief cup bearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants.
21And he restored the chief cupbearer to his office, and he gave the cup into Pharao's hand.
21He restored the chief cup bearer to his position again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand;
22And he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph interpreted to them.

23Yet did not the chief cupbearer remember Joseph, but forgot him.
