1And Jacob called his sons, and said to them, Assemble yourselves , that I may tell you what shall happen to you in the last days .
1Jacob called to his sons, and said: “Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which will happen to you in the days to come.
2Gather yourselves together, and hear me, sons of Jacob; hear Israel, hear your father.
2Assemble yourselves, and hear, you sons of Jacob. Listen to Israel, your father.
3Ruben, thou [art] my first-born, thou my strength, and the first of my children, hard to be endured, [hard and] self-willed.
3“Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, excelling in dignity, and excelling in power.
4Thou wast insolent like water, burst not forth with violence, for thou wentest up to the bed of thy father; then thou defiledst the couch, whereupon thou wentest up .
4Boiling over like water, you shall not excel, because you went up to your father’s bed, then defiled it. He went up to my couch.
5Symeon and Levi, brethren, accomplished the injustice of their cutting off.
5“Simeon and Levi are brothers. Their swords are weapons of violence.
6Let not my soulcome into their counsel, and let not mine inward parts contend in their conspiracy, for in their wrath they slew men, and in their passion they houghed a bull.
6My soul, don’t come into their council. My glory, don’t be united to their assembly; for in their anger they killed men. In their self-will they hamstrung cattle.
7Cursed be their wrath, for it was wilful, and their anger, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

8Juda, thy brethren have praised thee, and thy hands shall be on the back of thine enemies; thy father's sons shall do thee reverence.
8“Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies. Your father’s sons will bow down before you.
9Juda is a lion's whelp: from the tender plant, my son, thou art gone up, having couched thou liest as a lion, and as a whelp; who shall stir him up?
9Judah is a lion’s cub. From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down, he crouched as a lion, as a lioness. Who will rouse him up?
10A ruler shall not fail from Juda, nor a prince from his loins, until there come the things stored up for him; and he is the expectation of nations.
10The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. The obedience of the peoples will be to him.
11Binding his foal to the vine, and the foal of his ass to the branch [of it], he shall wash his robe in wine, and his garment in the blood of the grape.

12His eyes shall be more cheering than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.

13Zabulon shall dwell on the coast, and he [shall be] by a haven of ships, and shall extend to Sidon.
13“Zebulun will dwell at the haven of the sea. He will be for a haven of ships. His border will be on Sidon.
14Issachar has desired that which is good; resting between the inheritances.
14“Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down between the saddlebags.
15And having seen the resting placethat it was good, and the landthat it was fertile, he subjected his shoulder to labour, and became a husbandman.
15He saw a resting place, that it was good, the land, that it was pleasant. He bows his shoulder to the burden, and becomes a servant doing forced labor.
16Dan shall judge his people, as one tribe too in Israel.
16“Dan will judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.
17And let Dan be a serpent in the way, besetting the path, biting the heel of the horse (and the rider shall fall backward),

19Gad, a plundering troop shall plunder him; but he shall plunder him, [pursuing him] closely.
19“A troop will press on Gad, but he will press on their heel.
20Aser, his bread [shall be] fat; and he shall yield dainties to princes.
20“Asher’s food will be rich. He will produce royal dainties.
21Nephthalim is a spreading stem, bestowing beauty on its fruit.
21“Naphtali is a doe set free, who bears beautiful fawns.
22Joseph is a son increased; my dearly loved son is increased; my youngest son, turn to me.
22“Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine by a spring. His branches run over the wall.
23Against whom men taking evil counsel reproached [him], and the archers pressed hard upon him.
23The archers have severely grieved him, shot at him, and persecuted him:
24But their bow and arrows were mightily consumed, and the sinews of their arms were slackened by the hand of the mighty one of Jacob; thence is he that strengthened Israel from the God of thy father;
24But his bow remained strong. The arms of his hands were made strong, by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, (from there is the shepherd, the stone of Israel),
25and my God helped thee, and he blessed thee with the blessing of heaven from above, and the blessing of the earth possessing all things, because of the blessing of the breastsand of the womb,
25even by the God of your father, who will help you, by the Almighty, who will bless you, with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb.
26the blessings of thy father and thy mother—it has prevailed above the blessing of the lasting mountains, and beyond the blessings of the everlasting hills; they shall be upon the head of Joseph, and upon the head of the brothers of whom he took the lead.
26The blessings of your father have prevailed above the blessings of my ancestors, above the boundaries of the ancient hills. They will be on the head of Joseph, on the crown of the head of him who is separated from his brothers.
27Benjamin, as a ravening wolf, shall eat still in the morning, and at evening he gives food.
27“Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning he will devour the prey. At evening he will divide the plunder.”
28All these [are] the twelve sons of Jacob; and their father spoke these words to them, and he blessed them; he blessed each of them according to his blessing.
28All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them, and blessed them. He blessed everyone according to his own blessing.
29And he said to them, I am added to my people; ye shall bury me with my fathers in the cave, which is in the field of Ephron the Chettite,
29He instructed them, and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
30in the double cave which is opposite Mambre, in the land of Chanaan, the cave which Abraam bought of Ephron the Chettite, for a possession of a sepulchre.
30in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a burial place.
31There they buried Abraam and Sarrha his wife; there they buried Isaac, and Rebecca his wife; there they buried Lea;

32in the portion of the field, and of the cave that was in it, [purchased] of the sons of Chet.

33And Jacob ceased giving charges to his sons; and having lifted up his feet on the bed, he died, and was gathered to his people.

5My father adjured me , saying, In the sepulchre which I dug for myself in the land of Chanaan, there thou shalt bury me; now then I will go up and bury my father, and return again.
5‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.’”
6And Pharao said to Joseph, Go up, bury thy father, as he constrained thee to swear.
6Pharaoh said, “Go up, and bury your father, just like he made you swear.”
7So Joseph went up to bury his father; and all the servants of Pharao went up with him, and the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt.

11And the inhabitants of the land of Chanaan saw the mourning at the floor of Atad, and said, This is a great mourning to the Egyptians; therefore he called its name , The mourning of Egypt, which is beyond Jordan.
11When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
12And thus his sons did to him.

13So his sons carried him up into the land of Chanaan, and buried him in the double cave , which cave Abraam bought for possession of a burying place, of Ephrom the Chettite, before Mambre.

14And Joseph returned to Egypt, heand his brethren, and those that had gone up with him to bury his father.

15And when the brethren of Josephsaw that their father was dead, they said, [Let us take heed], lest at any time Joseph remember evil against us, and recompense to us all the evils which we have done against him.
15When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully pay us back for all the evil which we did to him.”
16And they came to Joseph, and said, Thy father adjured [us] before his death, saying,

17Thus say ye to Joseph, Forgive them their injustice and their sin, forasmuch as they have done thee evil; and now pardon the injustice of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept while they spoke to him.
17‘You shall tell Joseph, “Now please forgive the disobedience of your brothers, and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ Now, please forgive the disobedience of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
18And they came to him and said, We, these [persons], are thy servants.
18His brothers also went and fell down before his face; and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”
19And Joseph said to them, Fear not, for I am God's.
19Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for am I in the place of God?
20Ye took counsel against me for evil , but God took counsel for me for good, that [the matter] might be as [it is] to-day, and much people might be fed.
20As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to save many people alive, as is happening today.
21And he said to them, Fear not, I will maintain you, and your families: and he comforted them, and spoke kindly to them.
21Now therefore don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones.” He comforted them, and spoke kindly to them.
22And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his brethren, and all the family of his father; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.
22Joseph lived in Egypt, he, and his father’s house. Joseph lived one hundred ten years.
23And Joseph saw the children of Ephraimto the third generation; and the sons of Machirthe son of Manasse were borne on the sides of Joseph.
23Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation. The children also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees.
24And Joseph spoke to his brethren, saying, I die, and God will surely visit you, and will bring you out of this land to the land concerning which God sware to our fathers, Abraam, Isaac, and Jacob.
24Joseph said to his brothers, “I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”
25And Joseph adjured the sons of Israel, saying, At the visitation with which God shall visit you, then ye shall carry up my bones hence with you.
25Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”
26And Joseph died, aged an hundred and ten years; and they prepared his corpse, and put him in a coffin in Egypt.
26So Joseph died, being one hundred ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
