1At this also my heart is troubled, and moved out of its place.
1“Yes, at this my heart trembles, and is moved out of its place.
2Hear thou a report by the anger of the Lord's wrath, and a discourse shall come out of his mouth.
2Hear, oh, hear the noise of his voice, the sound that goes out of his mouth.
3His dominion is under the whole heaven, and his light is at the extremities of the earth.
3He sends it out under the whole sky, and his lightning to the ends of the earth.
4After him shall be a cry with a [loud] voice; he shall thunder with the voice of his excellency, yet he shall not cause men to pass away, for one shall hear his voice .
4After it a voice roars. He thunders with the voice of his majesty. He doesn’t hold back anything when his voice is heard.
5The Mighty One shall thunder wonderfully with his voice: for he has done great thingswhich we knew not;
5God thunders marvelously with his voice. He does great things, which we can’t comprehend.
6commanding the snow, Be thou upon the earth, and the stormy rain, and the storm of the showers of his might.
6For he says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ likewise to the shower of rain, and to the showers of his mighty rain.
7He seals up the hand of every man, that every man may know his own weakness.
7He seals up the hand of every man, that all men whom he has made may know it.
8And the wild beasts come in under the covert, and rest in [their] lair.
8Then the animals take cover, and remain in their dens.
9Troubles come on out of the secret chambers, and cold from the mountain-tops.
9Out of its room comes the storm, and cold out of the north.
10And from the breath of the Mighty One he will send frost; and he guides the water in whatever way he pleases.
10By the breath of God, ice is given, and the width of the waters is frozen.
11And [if] a cloud obscures [what is] precious [to him], his light will disperse the cloud .
11Yes, he loads the thick cloud with moisture. He spreads abroad the cloud of his lightning.
12And he will carry round the encircling [clouds] by his governance, to [perform] their works: whatsoever he shall command them ,
12It is turned around by his guidance, that they may do whatever he commands them on the surface of the habitable world,
13this has been appointed by him on the earth, whether for correction, [or] for his land, or if he shall find him [an object] for mercy.
13whether it is for correction, or for his land, or for loving kindness, that he causes it to come.
14Hearken to this, O Job: stand still, and be admonished of the power of the Lord.
14“Listen to this, Job. Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
15We know that God has disposed his works, having made light out of darkness.
15Do you know how God controls them, and causes the lightning of his cloud to shine?
16And he knows the divisions of the clouds, and the signal overthrows of the ungodly.
16Do you know the workings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?
17But thy robe is warm, and there is quiet upon the land.
17You whose clothing is warm when the earth is still by reason of the south wind?
18Wilt thou establish with him [foundations] for the ancient [heavens? they are] strong as a molten mirror.
18Can you, with him, spread out the sky, which is strong as a cast metal mirror?
19Wherefore teach me, what shall we say to him? and let us cease from saying much.
19Teach us what we will tell him, for we can’t make our case by reason of darkness.
20Have I a book or a scribe by me, that I may stand and put man to silence?
20Will it be told him that I would speak? Or should a man wish that he were swallowed up?
21But the light is not visible to all: it shines afar off in the heavens, as that which is from him in the clouds.
21Now men don’t see the light which is bright in the skies, but the wind passes, and clears them.
22From the north [come] the clouds shining like gold: in these great are the glory and honour of the Almighty;
22Out of the north comes golden splendor. With God is awesome majesty.
23and we do not find another his equal in strength: [as for] him that judges justly, dost thou not think that he listens?
23We can’t reach the Almighty. He is exalted in power. In justice and great righteousness, he will not oppress.
24Wherefore men shall fear him; and the wise also in heart shall fear him.
24Therefore men revere him. He doesn’t regard any who are wise of heart.
1And after Elius had ceased from speaking, the Lord spoke to Job through the whirlwind and clouds, [saying],
1Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind,
2Who is this that hides counsel from me, and confines words in [his] heart, and thinks to conceal [them] from me?
2Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
3Gird thy loins like a man; and I will ask thee, and do thou answer me.
3Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
4Where wast thou when I founded the earth? tell me now, if thou hast knowledge,
4Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
5who set the measures of it, if thou knowest? or who stretched a line upon it?
5Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
6On what are its rings fastened ? and who is he that laid the corner-stone upon it?
6What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,
7When the stars were made, all my angels praised me with a loud voice.
7when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8And I shut up the sea with gates, when it rushed out, coming forth out of its mother's womb.
8“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
9And I made a cloud its clothing, and swathed it in mist.
9when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10And I set bounds to it , surrounding it with bars and gates.
10marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
11And I said to it, Hitherto shalt thou come , but thou shalt not go beyond, but thy waves shall be confined within thee.
11and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
12Or did I order the morning light in thy time; and [did] the morning star [then first] see his appointed place;
12“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
13to lay hold of the extremities of the earth, to cast out the ungodly out of it?
13that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
14Or didst thou take clay of the ground, and form a living creature, and set it with the power of speech upon the earth?
14It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.
15And hast thou removed light from the ungodly, and crushed the arm of the proud?
15From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
16Or hast thou gone to the source of the sea, and walked in the tracks of the deep?
16“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
17And do the gates of death open to thee for fear; and did the porters of hell quake when they saw thee?
17Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18And hast thou been instructed in the breadth of the [whole earth] under heaven? tell me now, what is the extent of it?
18Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
19And in what kind of a land does the light dwell? and of what kind is the place of darkness?
19“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
20If thou couldest bring me to their [utmost] boundaries, and if also thou knowest their paths;
20that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
21I know then that thou wert born at that time, and the number of thy years is great.
21Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
22But hast thou gone to the treasures of snow? and hast thou seen the treasures of hail?
22Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
23And is there a store [of them], for thee against the time of [thine] enemies, for the day of wars and battle ?
23which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24And whence proceeds the frost? or [whence] is the south wind dispersed over the [whole world] under heaven?
24By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
25And who prepared a course for the violent rain, and a way for the thunders;
25Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
26to rain upon the land where [there is] no man, the wilderness, where there is not a man in it; so as to feed the untrodden and uninhabited [land],
26to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
27and cause it to send forth a crop of green herbs?
27to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow?
28Who is the rain's father? and who has generated the drops of dew?
28Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?
29And out of whose womb comes the ice ? and who has produced the frost in the sky,
29Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?
30which descends like flowing water? who has terrified the face of the ungodly?
30The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
31And dost thou understand the band of Pleias, and hast thou opened the barrier of Orion?
31“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
32Or wilt thou reveal Mazuroth in his season, and the evening star with his rays? Wilt thou guide them?
32Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
33And knowest thou the changes of heaven, or the events which take place together under heaven?
33Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
34And wilt thou call a cloud with thy voice , and will it obey thee with a violent shower of much rain?
34“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
35And wilt thou send lightnings, and they shall go? and shall they say to thee, What is [thy pleasure]?
35Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
36And who has given to women skill in weaving, or knowledge of embroidery?
36Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
37And who is he that numbers the clouds in wisdom, and has bowed the heaven [down] to the earth?
37Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,
38For it is spread out as dusty earth, and I have cemented it as one hewn stone to another.
38when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
39And wilt thou hunt a prey for the lions? and satisfy the desires of the serpents?
39“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
40For they fear in their lairs, and lying in wait couch in the woods.
40when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
41And who has prepared food for the raven? for its young ones wander and cry to the Lord, in search of food.
41Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
