5Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and will lean his arm of flesh upon him, while his heart departs from the Lord.
5Yahweh says: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man, relies on strength of flesh, and whose heart departs from Yahweh.
6And he shall be as the wild tamarisk in the desert: he shall not see when good comes; but he shall dwell in barren [places], and in the wilderness, in a salt land which is not inhabited.
6For he will be like a bush in the desert, and will not see when good comes, but will inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, an uninhabited salt land.
7But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord shall be.
7“Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose confidence is in Yahweh.
8And he shall be as a thriving tree by the waters, and he shall cast forth his root toward a moist place: he shall not fear when heat comes, and there shall be upon him shady branches: he shall not fear in a year of drought, and he shall not fail to bear fruit.
8For he will be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes, but its leaf will be green, and will not be concerned in the year of drought. It won’t cease from yielding fruit.
9The heart is deep beyond all things, and it is the man, and who can know him?
9The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it?
10Ithe Lord try the hearts, and prove the reins, to give to every one according to his ways, and according to the fruits of his devices.
10I, Yahweh, search the mind. I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.
11The partridge utters her voice, she gathers [eggs] which she did not lay; [so is a man] gaining his wealth unjustly; in the midst of his days [his riches] shall leave him, and at his latter endhe will be a fool.
11As the partridge that sits on eggs which she has not laid, so is he who gets riches, and not by right. In the middle of his days, they will leave him. At his end, he will be a fool.
12An exalted throne of glory is our sanctuary.
12A glorious throne, set on high from the beginning, is the place of our sanctuary.
13O Lord, the hope of Israel, let all that have left thee be ashamed, let them that have revolted be written on the earth, because they have forsaken the fountain of life, the Lord.
13Yahweh, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you will be disappointed. Those who depart from me will be written in the earth, because they have forsaken Yahweh, the spring of living waters.
14Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for thou art my boast.
14Heal me, O Yahweh, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.
15Behold, they say to me, Where is the word of the Lord? let it come.
15Behold, they ask me, Where is Yahweh’s word? Let it be fulfilled now.
16But I have not been weary of following thee, nor have I desired the day of man; thou knowest; the [words] that proceed out of my lips are before thy face.
16As for me, I have not hurried from being a shepherd after you. I haven’t desired the woeful day. You know. That which came out of my lips was before your face.
17Be not to me a stranger, [but] spare me in the evil day .
17Don’t be a terror to me. You are my refuge in the day of evil.
18Let them that persecute me be ashamed, but let me not be ashamed: let them be alarmed, but let me not be alarmed: bring upon them the evil day , crush them with double destruction.
18Let them be disappointed who persecute me, but don’t let me be disappointed. Let them be dismayed, but don’t let me be dismayed. Bring on them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction.
19Thus saith the Lord; Go and stand in the gates of the children of thy people, by which the kings of Juda enter, and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem:
19Yahweh said this to me: “Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, through which the kings of Judah come in and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem.
20and thou shalt say to them, Hear the word of the Lord, ye kings of Juda, and all Judea, and all Jerusalem, [all] who go in at these gates:
20Tell them, Hear Yahweh’s word, you kings of Judah, all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates:
21thus saith the Lord; Take heed to your souls, and take up no burdens on the sabbath-day, and go not forth [through] the gates of Jerusalem;
21Yahweh says, “Be careful, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem.
22and carry forth no burdens out of your houses on the sabbath-day, and ye shall do no work: sanctify the sabbath-day , as I commanded your fathers.
22Don’t carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day. Don’t do any work, but make the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers.
23But they hearkened not, and inclined not their ear, but stiffened their neck more than their fathers [did], so as not to hear me, and not to receive correction.
23But they didn’t listen. They didn’t turn their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, and might not receive instruction.
24And it shall come to pass, if ye will hearken to me, saith the Lord, to carry in no burdens through the gates of this city on the sabbath-day, and to sanctify the sabbath-day , so as to do no work [upon it],
24It will happen, if you diligently listen to me,” says Yahweh, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but to make the Sabbath day holy, to do no work therein;
25that there shall enter through the gates of this city kings and princes sitting on the throne of David, and riding on their chariots and horses, they, and their princes, the men of Juda, and the dwellers in Jerusalem: and this city shall be inhabited for ever.
25then there will enter in by the gates of this city kings and princes sitting on David’s throne, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city will remain forever.
26And [men] shall come out of the cities of Juda, and from round about Jerusalem, and out of the land of Benjamin, and out of the plain country, and from the hill country, and from the south [country], bringing whole-burnt -offerings, and sacrifices, and incense, and manna, and frankincense, bringing praise to the house of the Lord.
26They will come from the cities of Judah, and from the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, from the lowland, from the hill country, and from the South, bringing burnt offerings, sacrifices, meal offerings, and frankincense, and bringing sacrifices of thanksgiving to Yahweh’s house.
27But it shall come to pass, if ye will not hearken to me to sanctify the sabbath-day , to bear no burdens, nor go in [with them by] the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath-day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the streets of Jerusalem, and shall not be quenched.
27But if you will not listen to me to make the Sabbath day holy, and not to bear a burden and enter in at the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem. It will not be quenched.”’”
1The word that came from the Lord to
1The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,
2Jeremias, saying, Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there thou shalt hear my words.
2Arise, and go down to the potters house, and there I will cause you to hear my words.
3So I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he was making a vessel on the stones.
3Then I went down to the potters house, and behold, he was making something on the wheels.
4And the vessel which he was making with his hands fell: so he made it again another vessel, as it seemed good to him to make [it].
4When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
5And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
5Then Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
6Shall I not be able, O house of Israel, to do to you as this potter? behold, as the clay of the potterare ye in my hands.
6“House of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter?” says Yahweh. “Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel.
7[If] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation, or upon a kingdom, to cut them off, and to destroy [them];
7At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it,
8and that nation turn from all their sins, then will I repent of the evils which I purposed to do to them.
8if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them.
9And [if] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nationand kingdom, to rebuild and to plant [it];
9At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it,
10and they do evil before me, so as not to hearken to my voice, then will I repent of the good which I spoke of, to do it to them.
10if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they don’t obey my voice, then I will repent of the good with which I said I would benefit them.
11And now say to the men of Juda, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Behold, I prepare evils against you, and devise a device against you: let every one turn now from his evil way , and amend your practices.
11“Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Yahweh says: “Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a plan against you. Everyone return from his evil way now, and amend your ways and your doings.”’
12And they said, We will quit ourselves like men, for we will pursue our perverse ways, and we will perform each the lusts of his evil heart.
12But they say, ‘It is in vain; for we will walk after our own plans, and we will each follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.’”
13Therefore thus saith the Lord; Enquire now among the nations, who has heard such very horrible things as the virgin of Israel has done?
13Therefore Yahweh says: “Ask now among the nations, ‘Who has heard such things?’ The virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing.
14Will fertilising streams fail [to flow] from a rock, or snow [fail] from Libanus? will water violently impelled by the wind turn aside?
14Will the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? Will the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?
15For my people have forgotten me, they have offered incense in vain, and they fail in their ways, [leaving] the ancient tracks, to enter upon impassable paths;
15For my people have forgotten me. They have burned incense to false gods. They have been made to stumble in their ways in the ancient paths, to walk in byways, in a way not built up,
16to make their land a desolation, and a perpetual hissing; all that go through it shall be amazed, and shall shake their heads.
16to make their land an astonishment, and a perpetual hissing. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished, and shake his head.
17I will scatter them before their enemies like an east wind; I will shew them the day of their destruction.
17I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy. I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.
18Then they said, Come, and let us devise a device against Jeremias; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and we will hear all his words.
18Then they said, Come! Let’s devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won’t perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let’s strike him with the tongue, and let’s not give heed to any of his words.
19Hear me, O Lord, and hear the voice of my pleading.
19Give heed to me, Yahweh, and listen to the voice of those who contend with me.
20Forasmuch as evil is rewarded for good; for they have spoken words against my soul, and they have hidden the punishment they [meant] for me; remember that I stood before thy face, to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them.
20Should evil be recompensed for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.
21Therefore do thou deliver their sons to famine, and gather them to the power of the sword: let their women be childless and widows; and let their men be cut off by death, and their young men fall by the sword in war.
21Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword. Let their wives become childless and widows. Let their men be killed and their young men struck by the sword in battle.
22Let there be a cry in their houses: thou shalt bring upon them robbers suddenly: for they have formed a plan to take me, and have hidden snares for me.
22Let a cry be heard from their houses when you bring a troop suddenly on them; for they have dug a pit to take me and hidden snares for my feet.
23And thou, Lord, knowest all their deadly counsel against me: account not their iniquities guiltless, and blot not out their sins from before thee: let their weakness come before thee; deal with them in the time of thy wrath.
23Yet, Yahweh, you know all their counsel against me to kill me. Don’t forgive their iniquity. Don’t blot out their sin from your sight, Let them be overthrown before you. Deal with them in the time of your anger.
