1Now the serpent was the most crafty of all the brutes on the earth, which the Lord God made, and the serpent said to the woman, Wherefore has God said, Eat not of every tree of the garden?
1Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the field which Yahweh God had made. He said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?”
2And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden,
2The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees of the garden,
3but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
3but not the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden. God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it. You shall not touch it, lest you die.’”
4And the serpent said to the woman, Ye shall not surely die.
4The serpent said to the woman, “You won’t really die,
5For God knew that in whatever day ye should eat of ityour eyes would be opened, and ye would be as gods, knowing good and evil.
5for God knows that in the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes to look upon and beautiful to contemplate, and having taken of its fruit she ate, and she gave to her husband also with her, and they ate .
6When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took some of its fruit, and ate. Then she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate it, too.
7And the eyes of both were opened, and they perceived that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons to go round them.

8And they heard the voice of the Lord Godwalking in the garden in the afternoon; and both Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God in the midst of the trees of the garden.
8They heard Yahweh God’s voice walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden.
9And the Lord God called Adam and said to him, Adam, where art thou?
9Yahweh God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
10And he said to him, I heard thy voice as thou walkedst in the garden, and I feared because I was naked and I hid myself.
10The man said, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
11And God said to him, Who told thee that thou wast naked, unless thou hast eaten of the tree concerning which I charged thee of it alone not to eat ?
11God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
12And Adam said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me—she gave me of the treeand I ate .
12The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13And the Lord God said to the woman, Why hast thou done this? And the woman said, The serpent deceived meand I ate.
13Yahweh God said to the woman, “What have you done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14And the Lord God said to the serpent, Because thou hast done this thou art cursed above all cattle and all the brutes of the earth, on thy breast and belly thou shalt go, and thou shalt eat earth all the days of thy life.
14Yahweh God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all livestock, and above every animal of the field. You shall go on your belly and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.
15And I will put enmity between thee and the womanand between thy seed and her seed, he shall watch against thy head, and thou shalt watch against his heel.
15I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”
16And to the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy pains and thy groanings; in pain thou shalt bring forth children, and thy submission shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
16To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. You will bear children in pain. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
17And to Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened to the voice of thy wife, and eaten of the tree concerning which I charged thee of it only not to eat —of that thou hast eaten, cursed [is] the ground in thy labours, in pain shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.
17To Adam he said, “Because you have listened to your wife’s voice, and have eaten from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life.
18Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to thee, and thou shalt eat the herb of the field.
18It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the herb of the field.
19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat thy bread until thou return to the earth out of which thou wast taken, for earth thou art and to earth thou shalt return .
19You will eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for you were taken out of it. For you are dust, and you shall return to dust.”
20And Adam called the name of his wife Life, because she was the mother of all living.
20The man called his wife Eve because she would be the mother of all the living.
21And the Lord God made for Adam and his wife garments of skin, and clothed them.

22And God said, Behold, Adam is become as one of us, to know good and evil, and now lest at any time he stretch forth his hand, and take of the tree of lifeand eat, and [so] he shall live for ever—
22Yahweh God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever—”
23So the Lord God sent him forth out of the garden of Delight to cultivate the ground out of which he was taken.
23Therefore Yahweh God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken.
24And he cast out Adam and caused him to dwell over against the garden of Delight, and stationed the cherubs and the fiery sword that turns about to keep the way of the tree of life.
24So he drove out the man; and he placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
1And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and brought forth Cainand said, I have gained a man through God.
1The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with Yahweh’s help.”
2And she again bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3And it was so after some time that Cain brought of the fruits of the earth a sacrifice to the Lord.

4And Abel also brought of the firstborn of his sheep and of his fatlings, and God looked upon Abel and his gifts,

6And the Lord God said to Cain, Why art thou become very sorrowful and why is thy countenance fallen?
6Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?
7Hast thou not sinned if thou hast brought it rightly, but not rightly divided it? be still, to thee shall be his submission, and thou shalt rule over him.
7If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”
8And Cain said to Abelhis brother, Let us go out into the plain; and it came to pass that when they were in the plain Cain rose up against Abelhis brother, and slew him.
8Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” While they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.
9And the Lord God said to Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? and he said, I know not, am I my brother's keeper?
9Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10And the Lord said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood cries to me out of the ground.
10Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.
11And now thou [art] cursed from the earth which has opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand.
11Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12When thou tillest the earth, then it shall not continue to give its strength to thee: thou shalt be groaning and trembling on the earth.
12From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”
13And Cain said to the Lord God, My crime [is] too great for me to be forgiven.
13Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14If thou castest me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from thy presence, and I shall be groaning and trembling upon the earth, then it will be that any one that finds me shall slay me.
14Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”
15And the Lord God said to him, Not so, any one that slays Cain shall suffer seven-fold vengeance; and the Lord God set a mark upon Cainthat no one that found him might slay him.
15Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.
16So Cain went forth from the presence of God and dwelt in the land of Nod over against Edem.
16Cain left Yahweh’s presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17And Cain knew his wife, and having conceived she bore Enoch; and he built a city; and he named the city after the name of his son, Enoch.

18And to Enoch was born Gaidad; and Gaidad begot Maleleel; and Maleleel begot Mathusala; and Mathusala begot Lamech.
18Irad was born to Enoch. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.
19And Lamech took to himself two wives; the name of the one was Ada, and the name of the second Sella.

20And Ada bore Jobel; he was the father of those that dwell in tents, feeding cattle.

21And the name of his brotherwas Jubal; he it was who invented the psaltery and harp .
21His brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe.
22And Sella also bore Thobel; he was a smith, a manufacturer both of brass and iron; and the sister of Thobel was Noëma.
22Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of bronze and iron. Tubal Cain’s sister was Naamah.
23And Lamech said to his wives, Ada and Sella, Hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech, consider my words, because I have slain a man to my sorrow and a youth to my grief.
23Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.
24Because vengeance has been exacted seven times on Cain's behalf, on Lamech's [it shall be] seventy times seven .
24If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times.”
25And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore a son, and called his name Seth, saying, For God has raised up to me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
25Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, “for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
26And Seth had a son , and he called his name Enos: he hoped to call on the name of the Lord God.
26A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on Yahweh’s name.
