1And it came to pass after Isaac was old, that his eyes were dimmed so that he could not see; and he called Esau, his elder son, and said to him, My son; and he said , Behold, I [am here].
1When Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his elder son, and said to him, “My son?” He said to him, “Here I am.”
2And he said, Behold, I am grown old, and know not the day of my death.
2He said, “See now, I am old. I don’t know the day of my death.
3Now then take thy weapons, both thy quiver and thy bow, and go into the plain, and get me venison,
3Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and get me venison.
4and make me meats, as I like them, and bring them to methat I may eat, that my soul may bless thee, before I die.
4Make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat, and that my soul may bless you before I die.”
5And Rebecca heard Isaac speaking to Esau his son; and Esau went to the plain to procure venison for his father.
5Rebekah heard when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.
6And Rebecca said to Jacob her younger son, Behold, I heard thy father speaking to Esau thy brother, saying,
6Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Behold, I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying,
7Bring me venison, and prepare me meats, that I may eatand bless thee before the Lord before I die.
7‘Bring me venison, and make me savory food, that I may eat, and bless you before Yahweh before my death.’
8Now then, my son, hearken to me, as I command thee.
8Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command you.
9And go to the cattle and take for me thence two kids, tender and good, and I will make them meats for thy father, as he likes.
9Go now to the flock and get me two good young goats from there. I will make them savory food for your father, such as he loves.
10And thou shalt bring them in to thy father, and he shall eat, that thy father may bless thee before he dies.
10You shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.”
11And Jacob said to his mother Rebecca, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I a smooth man.
11Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.
12Peradventure my father may feel me, and I shall be before him as one ill-intentioned, and I shall bring upon me a curse , and not a blessing.
12What if my father touches me? I will seem to him as a deceiver, and I would bring a curse on myself, and not a blessing.”
13And his mother said to him, On me be thy curse , son; only hearken to my voice, and go and bring [them] me.
13His mother said to him, “Let your curse be on me, my son. Only obey my voice, and go get them for me.”
14So he wentand took and brought them to his mother; and his mother made meats, as his father liked [them].
14He went, and got them, and brought them to his mother. His mother made savory food, such as his father loved.
15And Rebecca having taken the fine raiment of her elder son Esau which was with her in the house, put it on Jacobher younger son.
15Rebekah took the good clothes of Esau, her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob, her younger son.
16And she put on his arms the skins of the kids, and on the bare parts of his neck.
16She put the skins of the young goats on his hands, and on the smooth of his neck.
17And she gave the meats, and the loaves which she had prepared, into the hands of Jacob her son .
17She gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.
18And he brought [them] to his father, and said, Father; and he said, Behold I [am here]; who art thou, son?
18He came to his father, and said, “My father?” He said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”
19And Jacob said to his father, I, Esau thy first-born, have done as thou toldest me; rise, sit, and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
19Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done what you asked me to do. Please arise, sit and eat of my venison, that your soul may bless me.”
20And Isaac said to his son, What is this which thou hast quickly found ? And he said, That which the Lord thy God presented before me .
20Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” He said, “Because Yahweh your God gave me success.”
21And Isaac said to Jacob, Draw nigh to me, and I will feel thee, son, if thou art my son Esau or not.
21Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.”
22And Jacob drew nigh to his father Isaac, and he felt him, and said, The voice [is] Jacob's voice, but the hands [are] the hands of Esau.
22Jacob went near to Isaac his father. He felt him, and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
23And he knew him not, for his hands were as the hands of his brother Esau, hairy; and he blessed him,
23He didn’t recognize him, because his hands were hairy, like his brother Esau’s hands. So he blessed him.
24and he said, Art thou my son Esau? and he said, I [am].
24He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He said, “I am.”
25And he said, Bring hither, and I will eat of thy venison, son, that my soul may bless thee; and he brought [it] near to him, and he ate, and he brought him wine, and he drank.
25He said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s venison, that my soul may bless you.” He brought it near to him, and he ate. He brought him wine, and he drank.
26And Isaac his father said to him, Draw nigh to me, and kiss me, son.
26His father Isaac said to him, “Come near now, and kiss me, my son.”
27And he drew nigh and kissed him, and smelled the smell of his garments, and blessed him, and said, Behold, the smell of my son is as the smell of an abundant field, which the Lord has blessed.
27He came near, and kissed him. He smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him, and said, “Behold, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which Yahweh has blessed.
28And may God give thee of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, and abundance of corn and wine.
28God give you of the dew of the sky, of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and new wine.
29And let nations serve thee, and princes bow down to thee, and be thou lord of thy brother, and the sons of thy father shall do thee reverence; accursed is he that curses thee, and blessed is he that blesses thee.
29Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers. Let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you. Blessed be everyone who blesses you.”
30And it came to pass after Isaac had ceased blessing his son Jacob, it even came to pass, just when Jacob had gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
30As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had just gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
31And he also had made meats and brought them to his father; and he said to his father, Let my father ariseand eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me.
31He also made savory food, and brought it to his father. He said to his father, “Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s venison, that your soul may bless me.”
32And Isaac his father said to him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy first-born sonEsau.
32Isaac his father said to him, “Who are you?” He said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”
33And Isaac was amazed with very great amazement, and said, Whothenis it that has procured venison for me and brought it to me? and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and I have blessed him, and he shall be blessed.
33Isaac trembled violently, and said, “Who, then, is he who has taken venison, and brought it to me, and I have eaten of all before you came, and have blessed him? Yes, he will be blessed.”
34And it came to pass when Esau heard the words of his father Isaac, he cried out with a great and very bitter cry, and said , Bless , I pray thee, me also, father.
34When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, my father.”
35And he said to him, Thy brother has come with subtlety, and taken thy blessing.
35He said, “Your brother came with deceit, and has taken away your blessing.”
36And he said, Rightly was his name called Jacob, for lo! this second time has he supplanted me; he has both taken my birthright, and now he has taken my blessing; and Esau said to his father, Hast thou not left a blessing for me, father?
36He said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright. See, now he has taken away my blessing.” He said, “Haven’t you reserved a blessing for me?”
37And Isaac answered and said to Esau, If I have made him thy lord, and have made all his brethren his servants, and have strengthened him with corn and wine, what then shall I do for thee, son?
37Isaac answered Esau, “Behold, I have made him your lord, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants. I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What then will I do for you, my son?”
38And Esau said to his father, Hast thou [only] one blessing, father? Bless , I pray thee, me also, father. And Isaac being troubled, Esau cried aloud and wept.
38Esau said to his father, “Do you have just one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, my father.” Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
39And Isaac his father answered and said to him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above.
39Isaac his father answered him, “Behold, your dwelling will be of the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of the sky from above.
40And thou shalt live by thy sword, and shalt serve thy brother; and there shall be [a time] when thou shalt break and loosen his yoke from off thy neck.
40You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother. It will happen, when you will break loose, that you will shake his yoke from off your neck.”
41And Esau was angry with Jacob because of the blessing, with which his father blessed him; and Esau said in his mind, Let the days of my father's mourning draw nigh, that I may slay my brother Jacob.
41Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
42And the words of Esauher elder sonwere reported to Rebecca, and she sent and called Jacobher younger son, and said to him, Behold, Esau thy brother threatens thee to kill thee.
42The words of Esau, her elder son, were told to Rebekah. She sent and called Jacob, her younger son, and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you.
43Now then, my son, hear my voice, and rise and depart quickly into Mesopotamia to Labanmy brother into Charran.
43Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban, my brother, in Haran.
44And dwell with him certain days, until thy brother's anger
44Stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turns away—
45and rage depart from thee, and he forget what thou hast done to him; and I will send and fetch thee thence, lest at any time I should be bereaved of you both in one day.
45until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send, and get you from there. Why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?”
46And Rebecca said to Isaac, I am weary of my life, because of the daughters of the sons of Chet; if Jacob shall take a wife of the daughters of this land, wherefore should I live?
46Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these, of the daughters of the land, what good will my life do me?”
1And Isaac having called for Jacob, blessed him, and charged him, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of the Chananites.
1Isaac called Jacob, blessed him, and commanded him, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.
2Rise and depart quickly into Mesopotamia, to the house of Bathuel the father of thy mother, and take to thyself thence a wife of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.
2Arise, go to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father. Take a wife from there from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.
3And may my God bless thee, and increase thee, and multiply thee, and thou shalt become gatherings of nations.
3May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a company of peoples,
4And may he give thee the blessing of my father Abraam, even to thee and to thy seed after thee, to inherit the land of thy sojourning, which God gave to Abraam.
4and give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your offspring with you, that you may inherit the land where you travel, which God gave to Abraham.”
5So Isaac sent away Jacob, and he went into Mesopotamia to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebecca the mother of Jacoband Esau.
5Isaac sent Jacob away. He went to Paddan Aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.
6And Esau saw that Isaac blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Mesopotamia of Syria as he blessed him, to take to himself a wife thence, and [that] he charged him , saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of the Chananites;
6Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan Aram, to take him a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a command, saying, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;”
7and [that] Jacob hearkened to his father and his mother, and went to Mesopotamia of Syria.
7and that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan Aram.
8And Esau also having seen that the daughters of Chanaan were evil before his father Isaac,
8Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan didn’t please Isaac, his father.
9Esau went to Ismael, and took Maeleth the daughter of Ismael, the son of Abraam, the sister of Nabeoth, a wife in addition to his [other] wives.
9So Esau went to Ishmael, and took, in addition to the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.
10And Jacob went forth from the well of the oath, and departed into Charrhan.
10Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.
11And came to a certain placeand slept there , for the sun had gone down; and he took [one] of the stones of the place, and put it at his head, and lay down to sleep in that place,
11He came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12and dreamed, and behold a ladder fixed on the earth, whose top reached to heaven, and the angels of God ascended and descended on it.
12He dreamed and saw a stairway set upon the earth, and its top reached to heaven. Behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
13And the Lord stood upon it, and said, I am the God of thy father Abraam, and the God of Isaac; fear not, the land on which thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed.
13Behold, Yahweh stood above it, and said, “I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. I will give the land you lie on to you and to your offspring.
14And thy seed shall be as the sand of the earth; and it shall spread abroad to the sea, and the south, and the north, and to the east; and in thee and in thy seed shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed.
14Your offspring will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. In you and in your offspring, all the families of the earth will be blessed.
15And behold I am with thee to preserve thee continually in all the way wherein thou shalt go; and I will bring thee back to this land; for I will not desert thee, until I have done all that I have said to thee.
15Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”
16And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and said, The Lord is in this place, and I knew it not.
16Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, “Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn’t know it.”
17And he was afraid, and said, How fearful is this place ! this is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
17He was afraid, and said, “How awesome this place is! This is none other than God’s house, and this is the gate of heaven.”
18And Jacob rose up in the morning, and took the stone he [had] laid there by his head, and he set it up [as] a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it.
18Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on its top.
19And he called the name of that place , the House of God; and the name of the city before was Ulam-luz.
19He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.
20And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If the Lord God will be with me, and guard me throughout on this journey, on which I am going, and give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
20Jacob vowed a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on,
21and bring me back in safety to the house of my father, then shall the Lord be for a God to me.
21so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, and Yahweh will be my God,
22And this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be to me a house of God; and of all whatsoever thou shalt give me, I will tithe a tenth for thee.
22then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God’s house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give a tenth to you.”
