1And Jacob dwelt in the land where his father sojourned, in the land of Chanaan.
1Jacob lived in the land of his father’s travels, in the land of Canaan.
2And these are the generations of Jacob. And Joseph was seventeen years old, feeding the sheep of his father with his brethren, being young; with the sons of Balla, and with the sons of Zelpha, the wives of his father; and Joseph brought to Israel their father their evil reproach.
2This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.
3And Jacob loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was to him the son of old age; and he made for him a coat of many colours.
3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a tunic of many colors.
4And his brethren having seen that his father loved him more than all his sons, hated him, and could not speak anything peaceable to him.
4His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn’t speak peaceably to him.
5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and reported it to his brethren.
5Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.
6And he said to them, Hear this dream which I have dreamed.
6He said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:
7I thought ye were binding sheaves in the middle of the field, and my sheaf stood up and was erected, and your sheaves turned round, and did obeisance to my sheaf.
7for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf.”
8And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us, or shalt thou indeed be lord over us? And they hated him still more for his dreams and for his words.
8His brothers asked him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.
9And he dreamed another dream, and related it to his father, and to his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream: as it were the sun, and the moon, and the eleven stars did me reverence.
9He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.”
10And his father rebuked him, and said to him, What is this dream which thou hast dreamed? shall indeed both I and thy mother and thy brethren come and bow before thee to the earth ?
10He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to the earth before you?”
11And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying .

12And his brethren went to feed the sheep of their father to Sychem.

13And Israel said to Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed their flock in Sychem? Come, I will send thee to them; and he said to him, Behold, I [am here].
13Israel said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” He said to him, “Here I am.”
14And Israel said to him, Go and see if thy brethren and the sheep are well , and bring me word; and he sent him out of the valley of Chebron, and he came to Sychem.
14He said to him, “Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
15And a man found himwandering in the field; and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?
15A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16And he said, I am seeking my brethren; tell mewhere they feed [their flocks].
16He said, “I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock.”
17And the man said to him, They have departed hence, for I heard them saying, Let us go to Dothaim; and Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothaim.
17The man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’” Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.
18And they spied him from a distance before he drew nigh to them, and they wickedly took counsel to slay him.
18They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.
19And each said to his brother, Behold, that dreamer comes.
19They said to one another, “Behold, this dreamer comes.
20Now then come, let us kill him, and cast him into one of the pits; and we will say, An evil wild beast has devoured him; and we shall see what his dreams will be.
20Come now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.”
21And Ruben having heard it, rescued him out of their hands, and said, Let us not kill him.
21Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let’s not take his life.”
22And Ruben said to them, Shed not blood; cast him into one of these pits in the wilderness, but do not lay [your] hand upon him; that he might rescue him out of their hands, and restore him to his father.
22Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.
23And it came to pass, when Joseph came to his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his many-coloured coat that was upon him.
23When Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him;
24And they took himand cast him into the pit; and the pit was empty, it had not water .
24and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.
25And they sat down to eat bread; and having lifted up their eyes they beheld, and lo, Ismaelitish travellers came from Galaad, and their camels were heavily loaded with spices, and resin, and myrrh; and they went to bring them to Egypt.
25They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
26And Judas said to his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
26Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
27Come, let us sell him to these Ismaelites, but let not our hands be upon him, because he is our brother and our flesh; and his brethren hearkened.
27Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers listened to him.
28And the men, the merchants of Madian, went by, and they drew and lifted Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ismaelites for twenty pieces of gold; and they brought Joseph down into Egypt.
28Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. The merchants brought Joseph into Egypt.
29And Ruben returned to the pit, and sees not Joseph in the pit; and he rent his garments.
29Reuben returned to the pit, and saw that Joseph wasn’t in the pit; and he tore his clothes.
30And he returned to his brethren and said, The boy is not; and I, whither am I yet to go?
30He returned to his brothers, and said, “The child is no more; and I, where will I go?”
31And having taken the coat of Joseph, they slew a kid of the goats, and stained the coat with the blood.
31They took Joseph’s tunic, and killed a male goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood.
32And they sent the coat of many colours; and they brought it to their father, and said, This have we found; know if it be thy son's coat or no.
32They took the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Examine it, now, and see if it is your son’s tunic or not.”
33And he recognised it, and said, It is my son's coat, an evil wild beast has devoured him; a wild beast has carried off Joseph .
33He recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s tunic. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.”
34And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

35And all his sons and his daughters gathered themselves together, and came to comfort him; but he would not be comforted, saying, I will go down to my sonmourning to Hades; and his father wept for him.

36And the Madianites sold Joseph into Egypt; to Petephres, the eunuch of Pharao, captain of the guard.

1And it came to pass at that time that Judas went down from his brethren, and came as far as to a certain man of Odollam, whose name was Iras.

2And Judas saw there the daughter of a Chananitish man, whose name was Sava; and he took her, and went in to her.
2There, Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite man named Shua. He took her, and went in to her.
3And she conceivedand bore a son, and called his name, Er.
3She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.
4And she conceived and bore a son again; and called his name, Aunan.

5And she again bore a son; and called his name, Selom: and she was in Chasbi when she bore them.
5She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.
6And Judas took a wife for Erhis first-born, whose name was Thamar.
6Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
7And Er, the first-born of Judas, was wicked before the Lord; and God killed him.
7Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in Yahweh’s sight. So Yahweh killed him.
8And Judas said to Aunan, Go in to thy brother's wife, and marry her as her brother-in-law, and raise up seed to thy brother.
8Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”
9And Aunan, knowing that the seed should not be his—it came to pass when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spilled [it] upon the ground, so that he should not give seed to his brother's wife.
9Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.
10And his doing this appeared evil before God; and he slew him also.
10The thing which he did was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and he killed him also.
11And Judas said to Thamar, his daughter-in-law, Sit thou a widow in the house of thy father-in-law, until Selom my son be grown ;for he said, Lest he also die as his brethren; and Thamar departed, and sat in the house of her father.
11Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;” for he said, “Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.
12And the days were fulfilled, and Sava the wife of Judas died; and Judas, being comforted, went to them that sheared his sheep , himself and Iras his shepherd the Odollamite, to Thamna.
12After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.
13And it was told Thamar his daughter-in-law, saying, Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Thamna, to shear his sheep.
13Tamar was told, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”
14And having taken off the garments of her widowhood from her, she put on a veil, and ornamented her face, and sat by the gates of Ænan, which is in the way to Thamna, for she saw that Selom was grown; but he gave her not to him for a wife.
14She took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.
15And when Judas saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she covered her face, and he knew her not.
15When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
16And he went out of his way to her , and said to her, Let me come in to thee; for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law; and she said, What wilt thou give me if thou shouldest come in to me?
16He turned to her by the way, and said, “Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”
17And he said, I will send thee a kid of the goats from my flock; and she said, [Well], if thou wilt give me an earnest, until thou send it.
17He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”
18And he said, What is the earnest that I shall give thee? and she said, Thy ring, and thy bracelet, and the staff in thy hand; and he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.
18He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.
19And she aroseand departed, and took her veil from off her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
19She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20And Judas sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his shepherd the Odollamite, to receive the pledge from the woman; and he found her not.

21And he asked the men of the place, Where is the harlot who was in Ænan by the way-side? and they said, There was no harlot here.
21Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”
22And he returned to Judas, and said, I have not found her; and the men of the place say, There is no harlot here.
22He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”
23And Judas said, Let her have them, but let us not be ridiculed; I sent this kid, but thou hast not found her.
23Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”
24And it came to pass after three months , that it was told Judas, saying, Thamar thy daughter-in-lawhas grievously played the harlot, and beholdshe is with child by whoredom; and Judas said, Bring her out, and let her be burnt.
24About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”
25And as they were bringing her, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, I am with child by the man whose these things are; and she said, See whose is this ring and bracelet and staff.
25When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man who owns these.” She also said, “Please discern whose these are—the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”
26And Judas knew [them], and said, Thamar is cleared rather than I, forasmuch as I gave her not to Selom my son: and he knew her not again .
26Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.
27And it came to pass when she was in labour, that she also had twins in her womb.
27In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb.
28And it came to pass as she was bringing forth, one thrust forth his hand, and the midwife having taken hold of it, bound upon his hand a scarlet [thread], saying, This one shall come out first.
28When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”
29And when he drew back his hand, then immediately came forth his brother; and she said, Why has the barrier been cut through because of thee? and she called his name, Phares.
29As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, “Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez.
30And after this came forth his brother , on whose hand was the scarlet thread; and she called his name, Zara.
30Afterward his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.
