1And in the third month of the departure of the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt, on the same day, they came into the wilderness of Sina.
1In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.
2And they departed from Raphidin, and came into the wilderness of Sina, and there Israel encamped before the mountain.
2When they had departed from Rephidim, and had come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mountain.
3And Moses went up to the mount of God, and God called him out of the mountain, saying, These things shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and thou shalt report them to the children of Israel.
3Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him out of the mountain, saying, “This is what you shall tell the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:
4Ye have seen all that I have done to the Egyptians, and I took you up as upon eagles' wings, and I brought you near to myself.
4‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles wings, and brought you to myself.
5And now if ye will indeed hear my voice, and keep my covenant, ye shall be to me a peculiar people above all nations; for the whole earth is mine.
5Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine;
6And ye shall be to me a royal priesthood and a holy nation: these words shalt thou speak to the children of Israel.
6and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.
7And Moses came and called the elders of the people, and he set before them all these words, which God appointed them.
7Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which Yahweh commanded him.
8And all the people answered with one accord, and said, All things that God has spoken, we will do and hearken to: and Moses reported these words to God.
8All the people answered together, and said, All that Yahweh has spoken we will do.” Moses reported the words of the people to Yahweh.
9And the Lord said to Moses, Lo! I come to thee in a pillar of a cloud, that the people may hear me speaking to thee, and may believe thee for ever: and Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.
9Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever.” Moses told the words of the people to Yahweh.
10And the Lord said to Moses, Go down and solemnly charge the people, and sanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wash their garments.
10Yahweh said to Moses, Go to the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments,
11And let them be ready against the third day, for on the third day the Lord will descend upon mount Sina before all the people .
11and be ready for the third day; for on the third day Yahweh will come down in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai.
12And thou shalt separate the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves that ye go not up into the mountain, nor touch any part of it: every one that touches the mountain shall surely die.
12You shall set bounds to the people all around, saying, ‘Be careful that you don’t go up onto the mountain, or touch its border. Whoever touches the mountain shall be surely put to death.
13A hand shall not touch it, for [every one that touches] shall be stoned with stones or shot through with a dart, whether beast or whether man, it shall not live: when the voices and trumpets and cloud depart from off the mountain, they shall come up on the mountain.
13No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through; whether it is animal or man, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain.
14And Moses went down from the mountain to the people, and sanctified them, and they washed their clothes.
14Moses went down from the mountain to the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.
15And he said to the people, Be ready: for three days come not near to a woman.
15He said to the people, Be ready by the third day. Don’t have sexual relations with a woman.
16And it came to pass on the third day, as the morning drew nigh, there were voices and lightningsand a dark cloud on mount Sina: the voice of the trumpet sounded loud, and all the people in the camp trembled.
16On the third day, when it was morning, there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of an exceedingly loud trumpet; and all the people who were in the camp trembled.
17And Moses led the people forth out of the camp to meet God, and they stood by under the mountain.
17Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the lower part of the mountain.
18The mount of Sina was altogether on a smoke, because God had descended upon it in fire; and the smoke went up as the smoke of a furnace, and the people were exceedingly amazed.
18All of Mount Sinai smoked, because Yahweh descended on it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.
19And the sounds of the trumpet were waxing very much louder. Moses spoke, and God answered him with a voice.
19When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice.
20And the Lord came down upon mount Sina on the top of the mountain; and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.
20Yahweh came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. Yahweh called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.
21And God spoke to Moses, saying, Go down, and solemnly charge the people, lest at any time they draw nigh to God to gaze, and a multitude of them fall.
21Yahweh said to Moses, Go down, warn the people, lest they break through to Yahweh to gaze, and many of them perish.
22And let the priests that draw nigh to the Lord God sanctify themselves, lest he destroy some of them.
22Let the priests also, who come near to Yahweh, sanctify themselves, lest Yahweh break out on them.
23And Moses said to God, The people will not be able to approach to the mount of Sina, for thou hast solemnly charged us, saying, Set bounds to the mountainand sanctify it.
23Moses said to Yahweh, The people can’t come up to Mount Sinai, for you warned us, saying, Set bounds around the mountain, and sanctify it.’”
24And the Lord said to him, Go, descend, and come up thou and Aaron with thee; but let not the priests and the people force their way to come up to God, lest the Lord destroy some of them.
24Yahweh said to him, Go down! You shall bring Aaron up with you, but don’t let the priests and the people break through to come up to Yahweh, lest he break out against them.
25And Moses went down to the people, and spoke to them.
25So Moses went down to the people, and told them.
1And the Lord spoke all these words, saying:
1God spoke all these words, saying,
2I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
2I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3Thou shalt have no other gods beside me.
3“You shall have no other gods before me.
4Thou shalt not make to thyself an idol, nor likeness of anything, whatever things are in the heaven above, and whatever are in the earth beneath, and whatever are in the waters under the earth.
4“You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor serve them; for I am the Lord thy God, a jealous God, recompensing the sins of the fathers upon the children, to the third and fourth generation to them that hate me,
5you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me,
6and bestowing mercy on them that love me to thousands [of them], and on them that keep my commandments.
6and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord thy God will not acquit him that takes his name in vain.
7“You shall not misuse the name of Yahweh your God, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who misuses his name.
8Remember the sabbath dayto keep it holy.
8Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9Six days thou shalt labour, and shalt perform all thy work.
9You shall labor six days, and do all your work,
10But on the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God; on it thou shalt do no work , thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy servant nor thy maidservant, thine ox nor thine ass, nor any cattle of thine, nor the stranger that sojourns with thee.
10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates;
11For in six days the Lord made the heaven and the earth, and the seaand all things in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it .
11for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy.
12Honour thy father and thy mother, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest live long on the good land, which the Lord thy God gives to thee.
12“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.
13Thou shalt not commit adultery.
13“You shall not murder.
14Thou shalt not steal.
14“You shall not commit adultery.
15Thou shalt not kill.
15“You shall not steal.
16Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
16“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house; nor his field, nor his servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any of his cattle, nor whatever belongs to thy neighbour.
17“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.
18And all the people perceived the thundering, and the flashes, and the voice of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and all the people feared and stood afar off,
18All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled, and stayed at a distance.
19and said to Moses, Speak thou to us , and let not God speak to us, lest we die.
19They said to Moses, Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don’t let God speak with us, lest we die.
20And Moses says to them, Be of good courage, for God is come to you to try you, that his fear may be among you, that ye sin not.
20Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won’t sin.
21And the people stood afar off, and Moses went into the darkness where God was.
21The people stayed at a distance, and Moses came near to the thick darkness where God was.
22And the Lord said to Moses, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and thou shalt report it to the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.
22Yahweh said to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the children of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
23Ye shall not make to yourselves gods of silver, and gods of gold ye shall not make to yourselves .
23You shall most certainly not make gods of silver or gods of gold for yourselves to be alongside me.
24Ye shall make to me an altar of earth; and upon it ye shall sacrifice your whole burnt -offerings, and your peace -offerings, and your sheep and your calves in every place, where I shall record my name; and I will come to thee and bless thee.
24You shall make an altar of earth for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you.
25And if thou wilt make to me an altar of stones, thou shalt not build them hewn [stones]; for thou hast lifted up thy tool upon them, and they are defiled.
25If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of cut stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it.
26Thou shalt not go up to my altar by steps, that thou mayest not uncover thy nakedness upon it.
26You shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.
