17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Chanaan, and said to them, Go up by this wilderness; and ye shall go up to the mountain,
17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:
18and ye shall see the land, what it is, and the people that dwells on it, whether it is strong or weak, or [whether] they are few or many.
18And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;
19And what the land is on which they dwell , [whether] it is good or bad; and what the cities are wherein these dwell , whether they dwell in walled [cities] or unwalled.
19And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;
20And what the land is, whether rich or poor; whether there are trees in it or no: and ye shall persevere and take of the fruits of the land: and the days [were] the days of spring, the forerunners of the grape.
20And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.
21And they went upand surveyed the land from the wilderness of Sin to Rhoob, as men go in to Æmath.
21So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.
22And they went up by the wilderness, and departed as far as Chebron; and there [was] Achiman, and Sessi, and Thelami, the progeny of Enach. Now Chebron was built seven years before Tanin of Egypt.
22And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23And they came to the valley of the cluster and surveyed it; and they cut down thence a bough and one cluster of grapes upon it, and bore it on staves, and [they took] of the pomegranatesand the figs.
23And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
24And they called that place, The valley of the cluster, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
24The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
25And they returned from thence, having surveyed the land, after forty days.
25And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.
26And they proceeded and came to Mosesand Aaronand all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Pharan Cades; and they brought word to themand to all the congregation, and they shewed the fruit of the land:
26And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.
27and they reported to him, and said, We came into the land into which thou sentest us, a land flowing with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
27And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
28Only the nation that dwells upon it is bold, and they have very great and strong walled towns, and we saw there the children of Enach.
28Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
29And Amalec dwells in the land toward the south: and the Chettite and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwells in the hill country: and the Chananite dwells by the sea, and by the river Jordan.
29The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
30And Chaleb stayed the people from speaking before Moses, and said to him, Nay, but we will go up by all means, and will inherit it, for we shall surely prevail against them.
30And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
31But the men that went up together with him said, We will not go up, for we shall not by any means be able to go up against the nation, for it is much stronger than we.
31But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
32And they brought a horror of that land which they surveyed upon the children of Israel, saying, The landwhich we passed by to survey it, is a land that eats up its inhabitants ; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of extraordinary stature.
32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
33And there we saw the giants; and we were before them as locusts, yea even so were we before them.
33And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
1And all the congregation lifted up their voiceand cried; and the people wept all that night.
1And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron; and all the congregation said to them,
2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
3Would we had died in the land of Egypt! or in this wilderness, would we had died! and why does the Lord bring us into this landto fall in war? our wives and our children shall be for a prey: now then it is better to return into Egypt.
3And wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
4And they said one to another, Let us make a ruler, and return into Egypt.
4And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5And Moses and Aaron fell upon their face before all the congregation of the children of Israel.
5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6But Joshua the [son] of Naue, and Chaleb the [son] of Jephonne, of [the number of] them that spied out the land, rent their garments,
6And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
7and spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The landwhich we surveyed is indeed extremely good .
7And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8If the Lord choose us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which flows with milk and honey.
8If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9Only depart not from the Lord; and fear ye not the people of the land, for they are meat for us; for the season [of prosperity] is departed from them, but the Lord [is] among us: fear them not.
9Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.
10And all the congregation bade stone them with stones; and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud on the tabernacle of witness to all the children of Israel.
10But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11And the Lord said to Moses, How long does this people provoke me? and how long do they refuse to believe mefor all the signs which I have wrought among them?
11And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12I will smite them with death, and destroy them; and I will make of thee and of thy father's house a great nation, and much greater than this.
12I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13And Moses said to the Lord, So Egypt shall hear , for thou hast brought up this people from them by thy might.
13And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
14Moreover all the dwellers upon this landhave heard that thou art Lord in the midst of this people, who, O Lord, art seen [by them] face to face, and thy cloud rests upon them, and thou goest before themby day in a pillar of a cloud, and by night in a pillar of fire .
14And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15And [if] thou shalt destroy this nation as one man; then all the nations that have heard thy name shall speak, saying,
15Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16Because the Lord could not bring this people into the land which he sware to them, he has overthrown them in the wilderness.
16Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17And now, O Lord, let thy strength be exalted, as thou spakest, saying,
17And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18The Lord [is] long-suffering and merciful, and true, removing transgressions and iniquities and sins, and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the sins of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.
18The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19Forgive this people their sin according to thy great mercy, as thou wast favourable to them from Egypt until now.
19Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20And the Lord said to Moses, I am gracious to them according to thy word.
20And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21But [as] I live and my name is living, so the glory of the Lord shall fill all the earth.
21But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.
22For all the men who see my glory, and the signs which I wrought in Egypt, and in the wilderness, and have tempted me this tenth time, and have not hearkened to my voice,
22Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23surely they shall not see the land, which I sware to their fathers; but their children which are with me here, as many as know not good or evil, every inexperienced youth, to them will I give the land; but none who have provoked me shall see it.
23Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
24But my servant Chaleb, because there was another spirit in him, and he followed me , I will bring him into the land into which he entered, and his seed shall inherit it.
24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25But Amalec and the Chananite dwell in the valley: to-morrow turn and depart for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.
25(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
26And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27How long [shall I endure] this wicked congregation? I have heard their murmurings against me, [even] the murmuring of the children of Israel, which they have murmured concerning you.
27How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28Say to them, [As] I live, saith the Lord: surely as ye spoke into my ears, so will I do to you.
28Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all those of you that were reviewed, and those of you that were numbered from twenty years old and upward, all that murmured against me,
29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
30ye shall not enter into the land for which I stretched out my hand to establish you upon it; except only Chaleb the son of Jephonne, and Joshua the [son] of Naue.
30Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31And your little ones, who ye said should be a prey, them will I bring into the land; and they shall inherit the land, which ye rejected.
31But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
32And your carcasesshall fall in this wilderness.
32But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
33And your sons shall be fed in the wilderness forty years, and they shall bear your fornication, until your carcases be consumed in the wilderness.
33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34According to the number of the days during which ye spied the land, forty days, a day for a year, ye shall bear your sins forty years, and ye shall know my fierce anger.
34After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
35I the Lord have spoken, Surely will I do thus to this evil congregationthat has risen up together against me: in this wilderness they shall be utterly consumed, and there they shall die.
35I the Lord have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who came and murmured against it to the assembly so as to bring out evil words concerning the land,
36And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
37the men that spoke evil reports against the land, even died of the plague before the Lord.
37Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the Lord.
38And Joshua the son of Naue and Chaleb the son of Jephonne [still] lived of those men that went to spy out the land.
38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
39And Moses spoke these words to all the children of Israel; and the people mourned exceedingly.
39And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40And they rose early in the morningand went up to the top of the mountain, saying, Behold, we that are herewill go up to the place of which the Lord has spoken, because we have sinned.
40And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the Lord hath promised: for we have sinned.
41And Moses said, Why do ye transgress the word of the Lord? ye shall not prosper.
41And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the Lord? but it shall not prosper.
42Go not up, for the Lord is not with you; so shall ye fall before the face of your enemies.
42Go not up, for the Lord is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
43For Amalec and the Chananite [are] there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; because ye have disobeyed the Lord and turned aside, and the Lord will not be among you.
43For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you.
44And having forced their passage, they went up to the top of the mountain; but the ark of the covenant of the Lordand Moses stirred not out of the camp.
44But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45And Amalec and the Chananite that dwelt in that mountain came down, and routed them, and destroyed themunto Herman; and they returned to the camp.
45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
