1There was a man of Armathaim Sipha, of mount Ephraim, and his name [was] Helkana, a son of Jeremeel the son of Elias the son of Thoke, in Nasib Ephraim.
1Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
2And he [had] two wives; the name of the one [was] Anna, and the name of the second Phennana. And Phennana had children, but Anna had no child.
2He had two wives. The name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3And the man went up from year to year from his city, from Armathaim, to worship and sacrifice to the Lord God of Sabaoth at Selom: and [there were] Heli and his two sons Ophni and Phinees, the priests of the Lord.
3This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there.
4And the day came, and Helkana sacrificed, and gave portions to his wife Phennana and her children.
4When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters;
5And to Anna he gave a prime portion , because she had no child, only Helkana loved Anna more than the other; but the Lord [had] closed her womb.
5but he gave a double portion to Hannah, for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb.
6For the Lord gave her no child in her affliction, and according to the despondency of her affliction; and she was dispirited on this account, that the Lord shut up her womb so as not to give her a child.
6Her rival provoked her severely, to irritate her, because Yahweh had shut up her womb.
7So she did year by year, in going up to the house of the Lord; and she was dispirited, and wept, and did not eat.
7So year by year, when she went up to Yahweh’s house, her rival provoked her. Therefore she wept, and didn’t eat.
8And Helkana her husband said to her, Anna: and she said to him, Here [am] I, my lord: and he said to her, What ails thee that thou weepest? and why dost thou not eat? and why does thy heart smite thee? [am] I not better to thee than ten children?
8Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why don’t you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
9And Anna rose up after they had eaten in Selom, and stood before the Lord: and Heli the priest [was] on a seat by the threshold of the temple of the Lord.
9So Hannah rose up after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of Yahweh’s temple.
10And she [was] very much grieved in spirit, and prayed to the Lord, and wept abundantly.
10She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, weeping bitterly.
11And she vowed a vow to the Lord, saying, O Lord God of Sabaoth, if thou wilt indeed look upon the humiliation of thine handmaid, and remember me, and give to thine handmaid a man-child, then will I indeed dedicate him to thee till the day of his death; and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and no razor shall come upon his head.
11She vowed a vow, and said, “Yahweh of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.”
12And it came to pass, while she was long praying before the Lord, that Heli the priest marked her mouth.
12As she continued praying before Yahweh, Eli saw her mouth.
13And she was speaking in her heart, and her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: and Heli accounted her a drunken woman.
13Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.
14And the servant of Heli said to her, How long wilt thou be drunken? take away thy wine from thee, and go out from the presence of the Lord.
14Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Get rid of your wine!”
15And Anna answered and said, Nay, my lord, [I live] in a hard day, and I have not drunk wine or strong drink, and I pour out my soul before the Lord.
15Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh.
16Count not thy handmaid for a pestilent woman, for by reason of the abundance of my importunity I have continued [my prayer] until now.
16Don’t consider your servant a wicked woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation.”
17And Heli answered and said to her, Go in peace: the God of Israel give thee all thy petition, which thou hast asked of him.
17Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him.”
18And she said, Thine handmaid has found favour in thine eyes: and the woman went her way, and entered into her lodging, and ateand drank with her husband, and her countenance was no more sad .
18She said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate; and her facial expression wasn’t sad any more.
19And they rise early in the morning, and worship the Lord, and they go their way: and Helkana went into his house at Armathaim, and knew his wife Anna; and the Lord remembered her, and she conceived.
19They rose up in the morning early and worshiped Yahweh, then returned and came to their house to Ramah. Then Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her.
20And it came to pass when the time was come, that she brought forth a son, and called his name Samuel, and said, Because I asked him of the Lord God of Sabaoth.
20When the time had come, Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of Yahweh.”
21And the man Helkana and all his housewent up to offer in Selom the yearly sacrifice, and his vows, and all the tithes of his land.
21The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice and his vow.
22But Anna did not go up with him, for she said to her husband, [I will not go up] until the child goes up, when I have weanedhim, and he shall be presented before the Lord, and he shall abide there continually.
22But Hannah didn’t go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and stay there forever.”
23And Helkana her husband said to her, Do that which is good in thine eyes, abide still until thou shalt have weaned him; but may the Lord establish that which comes out of thy mouth: and the woman tarried, and suckled her son until she had weaned him.
23Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may Yahweh establish his word.” So the woman waited and nursed her son until she weaned him.
24And she went up with him to Selom with a calf of three years old, and loaves, and an ephah of fine flour, and a bottle of wine: and she entered into the house of the Lord in Selom, and the child with them.
24When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah of meal, and a container of wine, and brought him to Yahweh’s house in Shiloh. The child was young.
25And they brought him before the Lord; and his father slew his offering which he offered from year to year to the Lord; and he brought near the child, and slew the calf; and Anna the mother of the child brought him to Heli.
25They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.
26And she said, I pray thee, my lord, as thy soul liveth, I [am] the woman that stood in thy presence with thee while praying to the Lord.
26She said, “Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to Yahweh.
27For this child I prayed; and the Lord has given me my request that I asked of him.
27I prayed for this child, and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him.
28And I lend him to the Lord all his days that he lives, a loan to the Lord: and she said,
28Therefore I have also given him to Yahweh. As long as he lives he is given to Yahweh.” He worshiped Yahweh there.
1My heart is established in the Lord, my horn is exalted in my God; my mouth is enlarged over my enemies, I have rejoiced in thy salvation.
1Hannah prayed, and said, “My heart exults in Yahweh! My horn is exalted in Yahweh. My mouth is enlarged over my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation.
2For there is none holy as the Lord, and there is none righteous as our God: there is none holy beside thee.
2There is no one as holy as Yahweh, for there is no one besides you, nor is there any rock like our God.
3Boast not, and utter not high things; let not high-sounding words come out of your mouth, for the Lord [is] a God of knowledge, and God prepares his own designs.
3“Don’t keep talking so exceedingly proudly. Don’t let arrogance come out of your mouth, for Yahweh is a God of knowledge. By him actions are weighed.
4The bow of the mighty has waxed feeble, and the weak have girded themselves with strength.
4“The bows of the mighty men are broken. Those who stumbled are armed with strength.
5They that were full of breadare brought low; and the hungry have forsaken the land; for the barren has born seven, and she that abounded in children has waxed feeble.
5Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread. Those who were hungry are satisfied. Yes, the barren has borne seven. She who has many children languishes.
6The Lord kills and makes alive; he brings down to the grave, and brings up.
6“Yahweh kills and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol and brings up.
7The Lord makes poor, and makes rich; he brings low, and lifts up.
7Yahweh makes poor and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up.
8He lifts up the poor from the earth, and raises the needy from the dunghill; to seat him with the princes of the people, and causing them to inherit the throne of glory:
8He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill to make them sit with princes and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are Yahweh’s. He has set the world on them.
9granting his petition to him that prays; and he blesses the years of the righteous, for by strength cannot man prevail .
9He will keep the feet of his holy ones, but the wicked will be put to silence in darkness; for no man will prevail by strength.
10The Lord will weaken his adversary; the Lord [is] holy. Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, nor let the mighty man boast in his strength, and let not the rich man boast in his wealth; but let him that boasts boast in this, to understand and know the Lord, and to execute judgment and justice in the midst of the earth. The Lord has gone up to the heavens, and has thundered: he will judge the extremities of the earth, and he gives strength to our kings, and will exalt the horn of his Christ. And she left him there before the Lord,
10Those who strive with Yahweh shall be broken to pieces. He will thunder against them in the sky. “Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
11and departed to Armathaim: and the child ministered in the presence of the Lord before Heli the priest.
11Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. The child served Yahweh before Eli the priest.
12And the sons of Heli the priest [were] evil sons, not knowing the Lord.
12Now the sons of Eli were wicked men. They didn’t know Yahweh.
13And the priest's claim from every one of the people that sacrificed [was this]: the servant of the priestcame when the flesh was in seething, and a flesh-hook of three teeth [was] in his hand.
13The custom of the priests with the people was that when anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant came while the meat was boiling, with a fork of three teeth in his hand;
14And he struck it into the great caldron, or into the brazen vessel, or into the pot, and whatever came up with the flesh-hook, the priest took for himself: so they did to all Israel that came to sacrifice to the Lord in Selom.
14and he stabbed it into the pan, or kettle, or cauldron, or pot. The priest took all that the fork brought up for himself. They did this to all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh.
15And before the fat was burnt for a sweet savour, the servant of the priest would come, and say to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest, and I will by no means take of thee sodden flesh out of the caldron.
15Yes, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat to roast for the priest; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw.”
16And [if] the man that sacrificed said , First let the fat be burned , as it is fit, and take for thyself of all things which thy soul desires: then he would say, Nay, for thou shalt give it me now; and if not, I will take it by force.
16If the man said to him, “Let the fat be burned first, and then take as much as your soul desires;” then he would say, “No, but you shall give it to me now; and if not, I will take it by force.”
17So the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord, for they set at nought the offering of the Lord.
17The sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh; for the men despised Yahweh’s offering.
18And Samuel ministered before the Lord, a child girt with a linen ephod.
18But Samuel ministered before Yahweh, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod.
19And his mother made him a little doublet, and brought it to him from year to year, in her going up in company with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
19Moreover his mother made him a little robe, and brought it to him from year to year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
20And Heli blessed Helcana and his wife, saying, The Lord recompense to thee seed of this woman, in return for the loan which thou hast lent to the Lord: and the man returned to his place.
20Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, “May Yahweh give you offspring from this woman for the petition which was asked of Yahweh.” Then they went to their own home.
21And the Lord visited Anna, and she bore yet three sons, and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the Lord.
21Yahweh visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before Yahweh.
22And Heli [was] very old, and he heard what his sons did to the children of Israel.
22Now Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons did to all Israel, and how that they slept with the women who served at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
23And he said to them, Why do ye according to this thing, which I hear from the mouth of all the people of the Lord?
23He said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people.
24Nay [my] sons, for the report which I hear [is] not good; do not so, for the reports which I hear [are] not good, so that the people do not serve God.
24No, my sons; for it is not a good report that I hear! You make Yahweh’s people disobey.
25If a man should at all sin against another, then shall they pray for him to the Lord; but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall intreat for him? But they hearkened not to the voice of their father, because the Lord would by all means destroy them.
25If one man sins against another, God will judge him; but if a man sins against Yahweh, who will intercede for him?” Notwithstanding, they didn’t listen to the voice of their father, because Yahweh intended to kill them.
26And the child Samuel advanced, and was in favour with God and with men.
26The child Samuel grew on, and increased in favor both with Yahweh and also with men.
27And a man of God came to Heli, and said , Thus says the Lord, I plainly revealed myself to the house of thy father, when they were servants in Egypt to the house of Pharao.
27A man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Did I reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in bondage to Pharaoh’s house?
28And I chose the house of thy father out of all the tribes of Israel to minister to me in the priest's office, to go up to my altar, and to burn incense, and to wear an ephod. And I gave to the house of thy father all the offerings by fire of the children of Israel for food.
28Didn’t I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? Didn’t I give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire?
29And wherefore hast thou looked upon my incense-offering and my meat-offering with a shameless eye, and hast honoured thy sons above me, so that they should bless themselves with the first-fruits of every sacrifice of Israel before me?
29Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in my habitation, and honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?’
30Therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel, I said, Thy house and the house of thy father shall pass before me for ever: but now the Lord says, That be far from me; for I will only honour them that honour me, and he that sets me at nought shall be despised.
30“Therefore Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father should walk before me forever.’ But now Yahweh says, ‘Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be cursed.
31Behold, the days come when I will destroy thy seed and the seed of thy father's house.
31Behold, the days come that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, that there will not be an old man in your house.
32And thou shalt not have an old man in my house for ever.
32You will see the affliction of my habitation, in all the wealth which I will give Israel. There shall not be an old man in your house forever.
33And [if] I do not destroy a man of thine from my altar, [it shall be] that his eyes may fail and his soul may perish; and every one that remains in thy house shall fall by the sword of men.
33The man of yours whom I don’t cut off from my altar will consume your eyes and grieve your heart. All the increase of your house will die in the flower of their age.
34And this which shall come upon thy two sons Ophni and Phinees shall be a sign to thee; in one day they shall both die.
34This will be the sign to you that will come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they will both die.
35And I will raise up to myself a faithful priest, who shall do all that is in my heart and in my soul; and I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before my Christ for ever.
35I will raise up a faithful priest for myself who will do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind. I will build him a sure house. He will walk before my anointed forever.
36And it shall come to pass that he that survives in thy house, shall come to do obeisance before him for a little piece of silver , saying, Put me into one of thy priests' offices to eat bread.
36It will happen that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and will say, “Please put me into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread.”’”
1And the child Samuel ministered to the Lord before Heli the priest: and the word of the Lord was precious in those days, there was no distinct vision.
1The child Samuel ministered to Yahweh before Eli. Yahweh’s word was rare in those days. There were not many visions, then.
2And it came to pass at that time that Heli was sleeping in his place; and his eyes began to fail, and could not see.
2At that time, when Eli was laid down in his place (now his eyes had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see),
3And the lamp of God [was burning] before it was trimmed, and Samuel slept in the temple, where [was] the ark of God.
3and God’s lamp hadn’t yet gone out, and Samuel had laid down in Yahweh’s temple where God’s ark was,
4And the Lord called, Samuel, Samuel; and he said, Behold, [here am] I .
4Yahweh called Samuel. He said, “Here I am.”
5And he ran to Heli, and said, [Here am] I, for thou didst call me: and he said, I did not call thee; return, go to sleep; and he returned and went to sleep.
5He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” He said, “I didn’t call. Lie down again.” He went and lay down.
6And the Lord called again, Samuel, Samuel: and he went to Heli the second time, and said, Behold [here am] I, for thou didst call me: and he said, I called thee not; return, go to sleep.
6Yahweh called yet again, “Samuel!” Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” He answered, “I didn’t call, my son. Lie down again.”
7And [it was] before Samuel knew the Lord, and [before] the word of the Lord was revealed to him.
7Now Samuel didn’t yet know Yahweh, neither was Yahweh’s word yet revealed to him.
8And the Lord called Samuel again for the third time: and he arose and went to Heli, and said, Behold, I [am here], for thou didst call me: and Heli perceived that the Lord [had] called the child.
8Yahweh called Samuel again the third time. He arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” Eli perceived that Yahweh had called the child.
9And he said , Return, child, go to sleep; and it shall come to pass if he shall call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, for thy servant hears: and Samuel went and lay down in his place.
9Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down. It shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10And the Lord came, and stood, and called him as before: and Samuelsaid, Speak, for thy servant hears.
10Yahweh came, and stood, and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak; for your servant hears.”
11And the Lord said to Samuel, Behold, I execute my words in Israel; whoever hears them, both his ears shall tingle.
11Yahweh said to Samuel, “Behold, I will do a thing in Israel at which both the ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.
12In that day I will raise up against Heli all things that I have said against his house; I will begin, and I will make an end.
12In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even to the end.
13And I have told him that I will be avenged on his house perpetually for the iniquities of his sons, because his sons spoke evil against God, and he did not admonish them.
13For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons brought a curse on themselves, and he didn’t restrain them.
14And [it shall] not [go on] so; I have sworn to the house of Eli, the iniquity of the house of Elishall not be atoned for with incense or sacrifices for ever.
14Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be removed with sacrifice or offering forever.”
15And Samuel slept till morning, and rose early in the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the Lord; and Samuel feared to tell [Heli] the vision.
15Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of Yahweh’s house. Samuel was afraid to show Eli the vision.
16And Heli said to Samuel , Samuel, [my] son; and he said, Behold, [here am] I .
16Then Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son!” He said, “Here I am.”
17And he said, What [was] the word that was spoken to thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: may God do these things to thee, and more also, if thou hide from me any thing of all the words that were spoken to thee in thine ears.
17He said, “What is the thing that he has spoken to you? Please don’t hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that he spoke to you.”
18And Samuel reported all the words, and hid them not from him. And Heli said, He [is] the Lord, he shall do that which is good in his sight.
18Samuel told him every bit, and hid nothing from him. He said, “It is Yahweh. Let him do what seems good to him.”
19And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and there did not fall one of his words to the ground.
19Samuel grew, and Yahweh was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.
20And all Israel knew from Dan even to Bersabee, that Samuel [was] faithful as a prophet to the Lord.
20All Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of Yahweh.
21And the Lord manifested himself again in Selom, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel ; and Samuel was accredited to all Israel as a prophet to the Lord from one end of the land to the other: and Heli [was] very old, and his sons kept advancing [in wickedness], and their way [was] evil before the Lord.
21Yahweh appeared again in Shiloh; for Yahweh revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by Yahweh’s word.
