1The vision which Esaias the son of Amos saw, which he saw against Juda and against Jerusalem, in the reign of Ozias, and Joatham, and Achaz, and Ezekias, who reigned over Judea.
1The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
2Hear, O heaven, and hearken, O earth: for the Lord has spoken, [saying], I have begotten and reared up children, but they have rebelled against me.
2Hear, heavens, and listen, earth; for Yahweh has spoken: “I have nourished and brought up children and they have rebelled against me.
3The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel does not know me, and the people has not regarded me.
3The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his masters crib; but Israel doesn’t know. My people don’t consider.
4Ah sinful nation, a people full of sins, an evil seed, lawless children: ye have forsaken the Lord, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
4Ah sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken Yahweh. They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They are estranged and backward.
5Why should ye be smitten [any] more, transgressing more and more? the whole head is pained, and the whole heart sad.
5Why should you be beaten more, that you revolt more and more? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
6From the feet to the head, there is no soundness in them; neither wound, nor bruise, nor festering ulcer [are healed]: it is not possible to apply a plaister, nor oil, nor bandages.
6From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it, but wounds, welts, and open sores. They haven’t been closed, bandaged, or soothed with oil.
7Your land is desolate, your cities burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is made desolate, overthrown by strange nations.
7Your country is desolate. Your cities are burned with fire. Strangers devour your land in your presence and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
8The daughter of Sion shall be deserted as a tent in a vineyard, and as a storehouse of fruits in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.
8The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a besieged city.
9And if the Lord of Sabaoth had not left us a seed, we should have been as Sodoma, and we should have been made like to Gomorrha.
9Unless Yahweh of Armies had left to us a very small remnant, we would have been as Sodom. We would have been like Gomorrah.
10Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodoma; attend to the law of God, thou people of Gomorrha.
10Hear Yahweh’s word, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah!
11Of what [value] to me is the abundance of your sacrifices ? saith the Lord: I am full of whole-burnt -offerings of rams; and I delight not in the fat of lambs, and the blood of bulls and goats:
11“What are the multitude of your sacrifices to me?”, says Yahweh. “I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed animals. I don’t delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of male goats.
12neither shall ye come [with these] to appear before me; for who has required these things at your hands? Ye shall no more tread my court.
12When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts?
13Though ye bring fine flour, [it is] vain; incense is an abomination to me; I cannot bear your new moons, and your sabbaths, and the great day;
13Bring no more vain offerings. Incense is an abomination to me. New moons, Sabbaths, and convocations— I can’t stand evil assemblies.
14[your] fasting, and rest from work, your new moons also, and your feasts my soul hates: ye have become loathsome to me; I will no more pardon your sins.
14My soul hates your New Moons and your appointed feasts. They are a burden to me. I am weary of bearing them.
15When ye stretch forth your hands, I will turn away mine eyes from you: and though ye make many supplications, I will not hearken to you; for your hands are full of blood.
15When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.
16Wash you, be clean; remove your iniquities from your souls before mine eyes; cease from your iniquities;
16Wash yourselves. Make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil.
17learn to do well; diligently seek judgment, deliver him that is suffering wrong, plead for the orphan, and obtain justicefor the widow.
17Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Defend the fatherless. Plead for the widow.
18And come, let us reason together, saith the Lord: and though your sins be as purple, I will make them white as snow; and though they be as scarlet, I will make [them] white as wool.
18“Come now, and let’s reason together,” says Yahweh: “Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
19And if ye be willing, and hearken to me, ye shall eat the good of the land:
19If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good of the land;
20but if ye be not willing, nor hearken to me, a sword shall devour you: for the mouth of the Lord has spoken this.
20but if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured with the sword; for Yahweh’s mouth has spoken it.
21How has the faithful city Sion, [once] full of judgment, become a harlot! wherein righteousness lodged , but now murderers.
21How the faithful city has become a prostitute! She was full of justice. Righteousness lodged in her, but now there are murderers.
22Your silver is worthless, thy wine merchants mix the wine with water.
22Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water.
23Thy princes are rebellious, companions of thieves, loving bribes, seeking after rewards; not pleading for orphans, and not heeding the cause of widows.
23Your princes are rebellious and companions of thieves. Everyone loves bribes and follows after rewards. They don’t defend the fatherless, neither does the cause of the widow come to them.
24Therefore thus saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts, Woe to the mighty [men] of Israel; for my wrath shall not cease against mine adversaries, and I will execute judgment on mine enemies.
24Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, the Mighty One of Israel, says: “Ah, I will get relief from my adversaries, and avenge myself on my enemies.
25And I will bring my hand upon thee, and purge thee completely, and I will destroy the rebellious, and will take away from thee all transgressors.
25I will turn my hand on you, thoroughly purge away your dross, and will take away all your tin.
26And I will establish thy judges as before, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: and afterward thou shalt be called the city of righteousness, the faithful mother-city Sion.
26I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called ‘The city of righteousness, a faithful town.
27For her captives shall be saved with judgment, and with mercy.
27Zion shall be redeemed with justice, and her converts with righteousness.
28And the transgressors and the sinners shall be crushed together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be utterly consumed.
28But the destruction of transgressors and sinners shall be together, and those who forsake Yahweh shall be consumed.
29For they shall be ashamed of their idols, which they delighted in, and they are made ashamed of the gardens which they coveted.
29For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, and you shall be confounded for the gardens that you have chosen.
30For they shall be as a turpentine tree that has cast its leaves, and as a garden that has no water.
30For you shall be as an oak whose leaf fades, and as a garden that has no water.
31And their strength shall be as a thread of tow, and their works as sparks, and the transgressors and the sinners shall be burnt up together, and there shall be none to quench [them].
31The strong will be like tinder, and his work like a spark. They will both burn together, and no one will quench them.
1The word which came to Esaias the son of Amos concerning Judea, and concerning Jerusalem.
1This is what Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
2For in the last daysthe mountain of the Lord shall be glorious, and the house of God [shall be] on the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall come to it.
2It shall happen in the latter days, that the mountain of Yahweh’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.
3And many nations shall go and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will tell us his way, and we will walk in it: for out of Sion shall go forth the law , and the word of the Lord out of Jerusalem.
3Many peoples shall go and say, Come, let’s go up to the mountain of Yahweh, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For the law shall go out of Zion, and Yahweh’s word from Jerusalem.
4And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plough-shares, and their spears into sickles: and nation shall not take up sword against nation, neither shall they learn to war any more.
4He will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
5And now, O house of Jacob, come, [and] let us walk in the light of the Lord.
5House of Jacob, come, and let’s walk in the light of Yahweh.
6For he has forsaken his peoplethe house of Israel, because their land is filled as at the beginning with divinations, as the [land] of the Philistines, and many strange children were born to them.
6For you have forsaken your people, the house of Jacob, because they are filled from the east, with those who practice divination like the Philistines, and they clasp hands with the children of foreigners.
7For their land is filled with silver and gold, and there was no number of their treasures; their land also is filled with horses, and there was no number of their chariots.
7Their land is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures. Their land also is full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots.
8And the land is filled with abominations, [even] the works of their hands; and they have worshipped [the works] which their fingers made.
8Their land also is full of idols. They worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made.
9And the mean man bowed down, and the great man was humbled: and I will not pardon them.
9Man is brought low, and mankind is humbled; therefore don’t forgive them.
10Now therefore enter ye into the rocks, and hide yourselves in the earth, for fear of the Lord, and by reason of the glory of his might, when he shall arise to strike terribly the earth.
10Enter into the rock, and hide in the dust, from before the terror of Yahweh, and from the glory of his majesty.
11For the eyes of the Lord are high, but man is low; and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.
11The lofty looks of man will be brought low, the arrogance of men will be bowed down, and Yahweh alone will be exalted in that day.
12For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and haughty, and upon every one that is high and towering, and they shall be brought down;
12For there will be a day of Yahweh of Armies for all that is proud and arrogant, and for all that is lifted up, and it shall be brought low—
13and upon every cedar of Libanus, of them that are high and towering, and upon every oak of Basan,
13for all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, for all the oaks of Bashan,
14and upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill,
14for all the high mountains, for all the hills that are lifted up,
15and upon every high tower, and upon every high wall,
15for every lofty tower, for every fortified wall,
16and upon every ship of the sea, and upon every display of fine ships.
16for all the ships of Tarshish, and for all pleasant imagery.
17And every man shall be brought low, and the pride of men shall fall: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.
17The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the arrogance of men shall be brought low; and Yahweh alone shall be exalted in that day.
18And they shall hide all [idols] made with hands,
18The idols shall utterly pass away.
19having carried [them] into the caves, and into the clefts of the rocks, and into the caverns of the earth, for fear of the Lord, and by reason of the glory of his might, when he shall arise to strike terribly the earth .
19Men shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Yahweh, and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.
20For in that day a man shall cast forth his silver and gold abominations, which they made [in order] to worship vanities and bats;
20In that day, men shall cast away their idols of silver and their idols of gold, which have been made for themselves to worship, to the moles and to the bats,
21to enter into the caverns of the solid rock, and into the clefts of the rocks, for fear of the Lord, and by reason of the glory of his might, when he shall arise to strike terribly the earth .
21to go into the caverns of the rocks, and into the clefts of the ragged rocks, from before the terror of Yahweh, and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.
