1Thus saith the Lord God to my anointedCyrus, whose right hand I have held, that nations might be obedient before him; and I will break through the strength of kings; I will open doors before him, and cities shall not be closed.
1Yahweh says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their armor, to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut:
2I will go before thee, and will level mountains: I will break to pieces brazen doors, and will burst iron bars .
2I will go before you and make the rough places smooth. I will break the doors of bronze in pieces and cut apart the bars of iron.
3And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, I will open to thee hidden , unseen [treasures], that thou mayest know that I, the Lord thy God, that call thee by name, am the God of Israel.
3I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that it is I, Yahweh, who calls you by your name, even the God of Israel.
4For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel mine elect, I will call thee by thy name, and accept thee: but thou hast not known me.
4For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel my chosen, I have called you by your name. I have given you a title, though you have not known me.
5For I am the Lord God, and there is no other God beside me; I strengthened thee, and thou hast not known me.
5I am Yahweh, and there is no one else. Besides me, there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not known me,
6That they that [come] from the east and they that [come] from the west may know that there is no God but me. I am the Lord God, and there is none beside.
6that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is no one besides me. I am Yahweh, and there is no one else.
7I am he that prepared light, and formed darkness; who make peace, and create evil; I am the Lord God, that does all these things.
7I form the light and create darkness. I make peace and create calamity. I am Yahweh, who does all these things.
8Let the heaven rejoice from above, and let the clouds rain righteousness: let the earth bring forth, and blossom [with] mercy, and bring forth righteousness likewise: I am the Lord that created thee.
8Rain, you heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open, that it may produce salvation, and let it cause righteousness to spring up with it. I, Yahweh, have created it.
9What excellent thing have I prepared as clay of the potter? Will the ploughman plough the earth all day? shall the clay say to the potter, What art thou doing that thou dost not work, nor hast hands? shall the thing formed answer him that formed it?
9Woe to him who strives with his Maker— a clay pot among the clay pots of the earth! Shall the clay ask him who fashions it, What are you making?’ or your work, ‘He has no hands?
10As though one should say to [his] father, What wilt thou beget me? and to his mother, What art thou bringing forth?
10Woe to him who says to a father, What have you become the father of?’ or to a mother, What have you given birth to?’”
11For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, who has formed the things that are to come, Enquire of me concerning my sons, and concerning the works of my hands command me.
11Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel and his Maker says: “You ask me about the things that are to come, concerning my sons, and you command me concerning the work of my hands!
12I have made the earth, and man upon it: I with my hand have established the heaven; I have given commandment to all the stars.
12I have made the earth, and created man on it. I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens. I have commanded all their army.
13I have raised him up [to be] a king with righteousness, and all his ways are right: he shall build my city, and shall turn the captivity of my people, not for ransoms, nor for rewards, saith the Lord of hosts.
13I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will make all his ways straight. He shall build my city, and he shall let my exiles go free, not for price nor reward,” says Yahweh of Armies.
14Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Egypt has laboured [for thee]; and the merchandise of the Ethiopians, and the Sabeans, men of stature, shall pass over to thee, and shall be thy servants; and they shall follow after thee bound in fetters, and shall pass over to thee, and shall do obeisance to thee, and make supplication to thee: because God is in thee; and there is no God beside thee, [O Lord].
14Yahweh says: “The labor of Egypt, and the merchandise of Ethiopia, and the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you, and they will be yours. They will go after you. They shall come over in chains. They will bow down to you. They will make supplication to you: ‘Surely God is in you; and there is no one else. There is no other god.
15For thou art God , yet we knew [it] not, the God of Israel, the Saviour.
15Most certainly you are a God who has hidden yourself, God of Israel, the Savior.’”
16All that are opposed to him shall be ashamed and confounded, and shall walk in shame: ye isles, keep a feast to me.
16They will be disappointed, yes, confounded, all of them. Those who are makers of idols will go into confusion together.
17Israel is saved by the Lord with an everlasting salvation: they shall not be ashamed nor confounded for evermore.
17Israel will be saved by Yahweh with an everlasting salvation. You will not be disappointed nor confounded to ages everlasting.
18Thus saith the Lord that made the heaven, this God that created the earth, and made it; he marked it out, he made it not in vain, but formed it to be inhabited : I am the Lord, and there is none beside.
18For Yahweh who created the heavens, the God who formed the earth and made it, who established it and didn’t create it a waste, who formed it to be inhabited says: I am Yahweh. There is no other.
19I have not spoken in secret, nor in a dark place of the earth: I said not to the seed of Jacob, Seek vanity: I, even I, am the Lord, speaking righteousness, and proclaiming truth.
19I have not spoken in secret, in a place of the land of darkness. I didn’t say to the offspring of Jacob, Seek me in vain.’ I, Yahweh, speak righteousness. I declare things that are right.
20Assemble yourselves and come; take counsel together, ye that escape of the nations: they that set up wood, [even] their graven image, have no knowledge, nor they who pray to gods that do not save.
20Assemble yourselves and come. Draw near together, you who have escaped from the nations. Those have no knowledge who carry the wood of their engraved image, and pray to a god that can’t save.
21If they will declare, let them draw nigh, that they may know together, who has caused these things to be heard from the beginning: then was it told you. I am God, and there is not another beside me; a just [God] and a Saviour; there is none but me.
21Declare and present it. Yes, let them take counsel together. Who has shown this from ancient time? Who has declared it of old? Haven’t I, Yahweh? There is no other God besides me, a just God and a Savior. There is no one besides me.
22Turn ye to me, and ye shall be saved, ye that [come] from the end of the earth: I am God, and there is none other.
22“Look to me, and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.
23By myself I swear, righteousness shall surely proceed out of my mouth; my words shall not be frustrated; that to me every knee shall bend, and every tongue shall swear by God,
23I have sworn by myself. The word has gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and will not be revoked, that to me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath.
24saying, Righteousness and glory shall come to him: and all that remove them from their borders shall be ashamed.
24They will say of me, ‘There is righteousness and strength only in Yahweh.’” Even to him will men come. All those who raged against him will be disappointed.
25By the Lord shall they be justified , and in God shall all the seed of the children of Israel be glorified.
25All the offspring of Israel will be justified in Yahweh, and will rejoice!
1Bel has fallen, Nabo is broken to pieces, their graven images are gone to the wild beasts and the cattle: ye take them packed up as a burden to the weary, exhausted, hungry, and [at the same time] helpless man;
1Bel bows down. Nebo stoops. Their idols are carried by animals, and on the livestock. The things that you carried around are heavy loads, a burden for the weary.
2who will not be able to save themselves from war, but they themselves are led [away] captive.
2They stoop and they bow down together. They could not deliver the burden, but they have gone into captivity.
3Hear me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of Israel, who are borne [by me] from the womb, and taught [by me] from infancy, [even] to old age:
3“Listen to me, house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, that have been carried from their birth, that have been carried from the womb.
4I am [he]; and until ye shall have grown old, I am [he]: I bear you, I have made, and I will relieve, I will take up and save you.
4Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.
5To whom have ye compared me? see, consider , ye that go astray.
5To whom will you compare me, and consider my equal, and compare me, as if we were the same?
6They that furnish gold out of a purse, and silver by weight, will weigh it in a scale, and they hire a goldsmith and make idols, and bow down, and worship them.
6Some pour out gold from the bag, and weigh silver in the balance. They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god. They fall down— yes, they worship.
7They bear it upon the shoulder, and go; and if they put it upon its place, it remains, it cannot move: and whosoever shall cry to it, it cannot hear; it cannot save him from trouble.
7They bear it on their shoulder. They carry it, and set it in its place, and it stands there. It cannot move from its place. Yes, one may cry to it, yet it can not answer. It cannot save him out of his trouble.
8Remember ye these things, and groan: repent, ye that have gone astray, return in your heart;
8Remember this, and show yourselves men. Bring it to mind again, you transgressors.
9and remember the former things [that were] of old: for I am God, and there is none other beside me,
9Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other. I am God, and there is none like me.
10telling beforehand the latter events before they come to pass, and they are accomplished together: and I said, All my counsel shall stand, and I will do all things that I have planned:
10I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done. I say: My counsel will stand, and I will do all that I please.
11calling a bird from the east, and from a land afar off, for the things which I have planned: I have spoken, and brought [him]; I have created and made [him]; I have brought him, and prospered his way.
11I call a ravenous bird from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. Yes, I have spoken. I will also bring it to pass. I have planned. I will also do it.
12Hearken to me, ye senseless ones, that are far from righteousness:
12Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted, who are far from righteousness!
13I have brought near my righteousness , and I will not be slow with the salvation that is from me: I have given salvation in Sion to Israel for glory .
13I bring my righteousness near. It is not far off, and my salvation will not wait. I will grant salvation to Zion, my glory to Israel.
