1And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
1Yahweh’s word came again to me, saying,
2Son of man, there were two women, daughters of one mother:
2Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother.
3and they went a-whoring in Egyptin their youth: there their breasts fell, there they lost their virginity.
3They played the prostitute in Egypt. They played the prostitute in their youth. Their breasts were fondled there, and their youthful nipples were caressed there.
4And their names were Oola the elder, and Ooliba her sister: and they were mine, and bore sons and daughters: and [as for] their names, Samaria was Oola, and Jerusalem was Ooliba.
4Their names were Oholah the elder, and Oholibah her sister. They became mine, and they bore sons and daughters. As for their names, Samaria is Oholah, and Jerusalem Oholibah.
5And Oola went a-whoring from me, and doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians that were her neighbours,
5“Oholah played the prostitute when she was mine. She doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbors,
6clothed with purple, princes and captains; [they were] young men and choice, all horsemen riding on horses.
6who were clothed with blue—governors and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on horses.
7And she bestowed her fornication upon them; all were choice sons of the Assyrians: and on whomsoever she doted herself, with them she defiled herself in all [their] devices.
7She gave herself as a prostitute to them, all of them the choicest men of Assyria. She defiled herself with the idols of whomever she lusted after.
8And she forsook not her fornication with the Egyptians: for in her youth they committed fornication with her, and they deflowered her, and poured out their fornication upon her.
8She hasn’t left her prostitution since leaving Egypt; for in her youth they lay with her. They caressed her youthful nipples and they poured out their prostitution on her.
9Therefore I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, into the hands of the children of the Assyrians, on whom she doted.
9Therefore I delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians on whom she doted.
10They uncovered her shame: they took her sons and daughters, and slew her with the sword: and she became a byword among women; and they wrought vengeance in her for the sake of the daughters.
10These uncovered her nakedness. They took her sons and her daughters, and they killed her with the sword. She became a byword among women; for they executed judgments on her.
11And her sister Ooliba saw [it], and she indulged in her fondness more corruptly than she, and in her fornication more than the fornication of her sister.
11“Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet she was more corrupt in her lusting than she, and in her prostitution which was more depraved than the prostitution of her sister.
12She doted upon the sons of the Assyrians, princes and captains, her neighbours, clothed with fine linen, horsemen riding on horses; [they were] all choice young men.
12She lusted after the Assyrians, governors and rulers—her neighbors, clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding on horses, all of them desirable young men.
13And I saw that they were defiled, [that] the two [had] one way.
13I saw that she was defiled. They both went the same way.
14And she increased her fornication, and she saw men painted on the wall, likenesses of the Chaldeans painted with a pencil,
14“She increased her prostitution; for she saw men portrayed on the wall, the images of the Chaldeans portrayed with red,
15having variegated girdles on their loins, having also richly dyed [attire] upon their heads; all had a princely appearance, the likeness of the children of the Chaldeans, of their native land.
15dressed with belts on their waists, with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them looking like princes, after the likeness of the Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their birth.
16And she doted upon them as soon as she saw them, and sent forth messengers to them into the land of the Chaldeans.
16As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them into Chaldea.
17And the sons of Babylon came to her, into the bed of rest, and they defiled her in her fornication, and she was defiled by them, and her soul was alienated from them.
17The Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their prostitution. She was polluted with them, and her soul was alienated from them.
18And she exposed her fornication, and exposed her shame: and my soul was alienated from her, even as my soul was alienated from her sister.
18So she uncovered her prostitution and uncovered her nakedness. Then my soul was alienated from her, just like my soul was alienated from her sister.
19And thou didst multiply thy fornication, so as to call to remembrance the days of thy youth, wherein thou didst commit whoredom in Egypt,
19Yet she multiplied her prostitution, remembering the days of her youth, in which she had played the prostitute in the land of Egypt.
20and thou didst dote upon the Chaldeans, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and their members [as] the members of horses.
20She lusted after their lovers, whose flesh is as the flesh of donkeys, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.
21And thou didst look upon the iniquity of thy youth, [the things] which thou wroughtest in Egypt in thy lodging, where were the breasts of thy youth.
21Thus you called to memory the lewdness of your youth, in the caressing of your nipples by the Egyptians because of your youthful breasts.
22Therefore, Ooliba, thus saith the Lord; Behold, I [will] stir up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy soul is alienated, and I will bring them upon thee round about,
22Therefore, Oholibah, the Lord Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will raise up your lovers against you, from whom your soul is alienated, and I will bring them against you on every side:
23the children of Babylon, and all the Chaldeans, Phacuc, and Sue, and Hychue, and all the sons of the Assyrians with them; choice young men, governors and captains, all princes and renowned, riding on horses.
23the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, Shoa, Koa, and all the Assyrians with them; all of them desirable young men, governors and rulers, princes and men of renown, all of them riding on horses.
24And they all shall come upon thee from the north, chariotsand wheels, with a multitude of nations, shields and targets; and [the enemy] shall set a watch against thee round about: and I will set judgment before them, and they shall take vengeance on thee with their judgments.
24They will come against you with weapons, chariots, and wagons, and with a company of peoples. They will set themselves against you with buckler, shield, and helmet all around. I will commit the judgment to them, and they will judge you according to their judgments.
25And I will bring upon thee my jealousy , and they shall deal with thee in great wrath: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and shall cast down thy remnant with the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy remnant fire shall devour.
25I will set my jealousy against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will take away your nose and your ears. Your remnant will fall by the sword. They will take your sons and your daughters; and the rest of you will be devoured by the fire.
26And they shall strip thee of thy raiment, and take [away] thine ornaments.
26They will also strip you of your clothes and take away your beautiful jewels.
27So I will turn back thine ungodliness from thee, and thy fornication from the land of Egypt: and thou shalt not lift up thine eyes upon them, and shalt no more remember Egypt .
27Thus I will make your lewdness to cease from you, and remove your prostitution from the land of Egypt, so that you will not lift up your eyes to them, nor remember Egypt any more.
28Wherefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I [will] deliver thee into the hands of those whom thou hatest, from whom thy soul is alienated.
28“For the Lord Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will deliver you into the hand of them whom you hate, into the hand of them from whom your soul is alienated.
29And they shall deal with thee in hatred, and shall take all [the fruits] of thy labours and thy toils, and thou shalt be naked and bare: and the shame of thy fornication shall be exposed: and thy ungodliness and thy fornication
29They will deal with you in hatred, and will take away all your labor, and will leave you naked and bare. The nakedness of your prostitution will be uncovered, both your lewdness and your prostitution.
30brought this upon thee, in that thou wentest a-whoring after the nations, and didst defile thyself with their devices.
30These things will be done to you because you have played the prostitute after the nations, and because you are polluted with their idols.
31Thou didst walk in the way of thy sister; and I will put her cup into thine hands.
31You have walked in the way of your sister; therefore I will give her cup into your hand.
32Thus saith the Lord; Drink thy sister's cup, deep and large, and full, to cause complete drunkenness.
32“The Lord Yahweh says: ‘You will drink of your sisters cup, which is deep and large. You will be ridiculed and held in derision. It contains much.
33And thou shalt be thoroughly weakened; and the cup of destruction, the cup of thy sister Samaria,
33You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of your sister Samaria.
34drink thou it, and I will take away her feasts and her new moons: for I have spoken [it], saith the Lord .
34You will even drink it and drain it out. You will gnaw the broken pieces of it, and will tear your breasts; for I have spoken it,’ says the Lord Yahweh.
35Therefore thus saith the Lord; Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore receive thou [the reward] of thine ungodliness and thy fornication.
35Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: ‘Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, therefore you also bear your lewdness and your prostitution.’”
36And the Lord said to me; Son of man, wilt thou not judge Oola and Ooliba? and declare to them their iniquities?
36Yahweh said moreover to me: “Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations.
37For they have committed adultery, and blood was in their hands, they committed adultery with their devices, and they passed through the fire to them their children which they bore to me.
37For they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands. They have committed adultery with their idols. They have also caused their sons, whom they bore to me, to pass through the fire to them to be devoured.
38So long too as they did these things to me, they defiled my sanctuary , and profaned my sabbaths.
38Moreover this they have done to me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my Sabbaths.
39And when they sacrificed their children to their idols, they also went into my sanctuary to profane it: and whereas they did thus in the midst of my house;
39For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and behold, they have done this in the middle of my house.
40and whereas they did thus to the men that came from afar, to whom they sent messengers, and as soon as they came, immediately thou didst wash thyself, and didst paint thine eyes and adorn thyself with ornaments,
40“Furthermore you sisters have sent for men who come from far away, to whom a messenger was sent, and behold, they came; for whom you washed yourself, painted your eyes, decorated yourself with ornaments,
41and satest on a prepared bed, and before it [there was] a table set out, and [as for] mine incense and mine oil, they rejoiced in them,
41and sat on a stately bed, with a table prepared before it, whereupon you set my incense and my oil.
42and they raised a sound of music, and [that] with men coming from the wilderness out of a multitude of men, and they put bracelets on their hands, and a crown of glory on their heads;
42“The voice of a multitude being at ease was with her. With men of the common sort were brought drunkards from the wilderness; and they put bracelets on their hands, and beautiful crowns on their heads.
43Therefore I said , Do they not commit adultery with these? and has she also gone a-whoring [after] the manner of a harlot?
43Then I said of her who was old in adulteries, ‘Now they will play the prostitute with her, and she with them.’
44And they went in to her, as [men] go in to a harlot; so they went in to Oola and to Ooliba to work iniquity.
44They went in to her, as they go in to a prostitute. So they went in to Oholah and to Oholibah, the lewd women.
45And they are just men, and shall take vengeance on them with the judgment of an adulteress and the judgment of blood: for they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands.
45Righteous men will judge them with the judgment of adulteresses and with the judgment of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands.
46Thus saith the Lord God, Bring up a multitude upon them, and send trouble and plunder into the midst of them .
46“For the Lord Yahweh says: ‘I will bring up a mob against them, and will give them to be tossed back and forth and robbed.
47And stone them with the stones of a multitude, and pierce them with their swords: they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and shall burn up their houses .
47The company will stone them with stones and dispatch them with their swords. They will kill their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire.
48And I will remove ungodliness out of the land, and all the women shall be instructed, and shall not do according to their ungodliness.
48“‘Thus I will cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to be lewd like you.
49And your ungodliness shall be recompensed upon you, and ye shall bear the guilt of your devices: and ye shall know that I am the Lord .
49They will recompense your lewdness on you, and you will bear the sins of your idols. Then you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.’”
1And the word of the Lord came to me, in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth [day] of the month, saying,
1Again, in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
2Son of man, write for thyself daily from this day, on which the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem, [even] from this day.
2Son of man, write the name of the day, this same day. The king of Babylon drew close to Jerusalem this same day.
3And speak a parable to the provoking house, and thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord; Set on the caldron, and pour water into it:
3Utter a parable to the rebellious house, and tell them, ‘The Lord Yahweh says, “Put the cauldron on the fire. Put it on, and also pour water into it.
4and put the pieces into it, every prime piece, the leg and shoulder taken off from the bones,
4Gather its pieces into it, even every good piece: the thigh and the shoulder. Fill it with the choice bones.
5[which are] taken from choice cattle, and burn the bones under them: her bones are boiled and cooked in the midst of her.
5Take the choice of the flock, and also a pile of wood for the bones under the cauldron. Make it boil well. Yes, let its bones be boiled within it.
6Therefore thus saith the Lord; O bloody city, the caldron in which there is scum, and the scum has not gone out of, she has brought it forth piece by piece, no lot has fallen upon it.
6“‘Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: “Woe to the bloody city, to the cauldron whose rust is in it, and whose rust hasn’t gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece without casting lots for it.
7For her blood is in the midst of her; I have set it upon a smooth rock: I have not poured it out upon the earth, so that the earth should cover it;
7“‘“For the blood she shed is in the middle of her. She set it on the bare rock. She didn’t pour it on the ground, to cover it with dust.
8that my wrath should come up for complete vengeance to be taken: I set her blood upon a smooth rock, so as not to cover it .
8That it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance, I have set her blood on the bare rock, that it should not be covered.
9Therefore thus saith the Lord, I will also make the firebrand great,
9“‘Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: “Woe to the bloody city! I also will make the pile great.
10and I will multiply the wood, and kindle the fire, that the flesh may be consumed, and the liquor boiled away;
10Heap on the wood. Make the fire hot. Boil the meat well. Make the broth thick, and let the bones be burned.
11and that [it] may stand upon the coals, that her brass may be thoroughly heated, and be melted in the midst of her filthiness, and her scum may be consumed,
11Then set it empty on its coals, that it may be hot, and its bronze may burn, and that its filthiness may be molten in it, that its rust may be consumed.
12and her abundant scum may not come forth of her.
12She is weary with toil; yet her great rust, rust by fire, doesn’t leave her.
13Her scum shall become shameful, because thou didst defile thyself: and what if thou shalt be purged no moreuntil I have accomplished my wrath?
13“‘“In your filthiness is lewdness. Because I have cleansed you and you weren’t cleansed, you won’t be cleansed from your filthiness any more, until I have caused my wrath toward you to rest.
14I the Lord have spoken; and it shall come, and I will do [it]; I will not delay, neither will I have any mercy: I will judge thee, saith the Lord, according to thy ways, and according to thy devices: therefore will I judge thee according to thy bloodshed, and according to thy devices will I judge thee, thou unclean, notorious, and abundantly provoking one.
14“‘“I, Yahweh, have spoken it. It will happen, and I will do it. I won’t go back. I won’t spare. I won’t repent. According to your ways and according to your doings, they will judge you,” says the Lord Yahweh.’”
15And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
15Also Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
16Son of man, beholdI take from thee the desire of thine eyes by violence: thou shalt not lament, neither shalt thou weep.
16Son of man, behold, I will take away from you the desire of your eyes with one stroke; yet you shall neither mourn nor weep, neither shall your tears run down.
17Thou shalt groan for blood, and have mourning upon thy loins; thy hair shall not be braided upon thee, and thy sandals [shall be] on thy feet; thou shalt in no wise be comforted by their lips, and thou shalt not eat the bread of men.
17Sigh, but not aloud. Make no mourning for the dead. Bind your headdress on you, and put your sandals on your feet. Don’t cover your lips, and don’t eat mourner’s bread.
18And I spoke to the people in the morning, as he commanded me in the evening, and I did in the morning as it was commanded me.
18So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died. So I did in the morning as I was commanded.
19And the people said to me, Wilt thou not tell us what these things are that thou doest?
19The people asked me, “Won’t you tell us what these things mean to us, that you act like this?
20Then I said to them, The word of the Lord came to me, saying,
20Then I said to them, “Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
21Say to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I [will] profane my sanctuary, the boast of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and for which your souls are concerned; and your sons and your daughters, whom ye have left, shall fall by the sword.
21‘Speak to the house of Israel, “The Lord Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pities; and your sons and your daughters whom you have left behind will fall by the sword.
22And ye shall do as I have done: ye shall not be comforted at their mouth, and ye shall not eat the bread of men.
22You will do as I have done. You won’t cover your lips or eat mourner’s bread.
23And your hair [shall be] upon your head, and your shoes on your feet: neither shall ye at all lament or weep; but ye shall pine away in your iniquities, and shall comfort every one his brother.
23Your turbans will be on your heads, and your sandals on your feet. You won’t mourn or weep; but you will pine away in your iniquities, and moan one toward another.
24And Jezekiel shall be for a sign to you: according to all that I have done shall ye do, when these things shall come; and ye shall know that I am the Lord .
24Thus Ezekiel will be a sign to you; according to all that he has done, you will do. When this comes, then you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.’”’”
25And thou, son of man, [shall it ] not [be] in the day when I take their strength from them , the pride of their boasting, the desires of their eyes, and the pride of their soul, their sons and their daughters,
25“You, son of man, shouldn’t it be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their heart—their sons and their daughters
26that in that day he that escapes shall come to thee, to tell [it] thee in thine ears?
26that in that day he who escapes will come to you, to cause you to hear it with your ears?
27In that day thy mouth shall be opened to him that escapes; thou shalt speak, and shalt be no longer dumb: and thou shalt be for a sign to them, and they shall know that I am the Lord.
27In that day your mouth will be opened to him who has escaped, and you will speak and be no more mute. So you will be a sign to them. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.
