1Woe to them that set at nought Sion, and that trust in the mountain of Samaria: they have gathered [the harvest of] the heads of the nations, and they have gone in themselves.
1Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who are secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come!
2O house of Israel, pass by all [of you], and see; and pass by thence to Ematrabba; and thence descend to Geth of the Philistines, the chief of all these kingdoms, [see] if their coasts are greater than your coasts.
2Go to Calneh, and see. From there go to Hamath the great. Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms? Is their border greater than your border?
3Ye who are approaching the evil day, who are drawing near and adopting false sabbaths;
3Alas for you who put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near,
4who sleep upon beds of ivory, and live delicately on their couches, and eat kids out of the flocks, and sucking calves out of the midst of the stalls;
4who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch themselves on their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the middle of the stall,
5who excel in the sound of musical instruments; they have regarded them as abiding, not as fleeting [pleasures];
5who strum on the strings of a harp, who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David;
6who drink strained wine , and anoint themselves with the best ointment: and have suffered nothing on occasion of the calamity of Joseph.
6who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best oils, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
7Therefore now shall they depart into captivity from the dominion of princes, and the neighing of horses shall be cut off from Ephraim.
7Therefore they will now go captive with the first who go captive. The feasting and lounging will end.
8For the Lord has sworn by himself, [saying], Because I abhor all the pride of Jacob, I do also hate his countries, and I will cut off [his] city with all who inhabit it.
8“The Lord Yahweh has sworn by himself,” says Yahweh, the God of Armies: “I abhor the pride of Jacob, and detest his fortresses. Therefore I will deliver up the city with all that is in it.
9And it shall come to pass, if there be ten men left in one house, that they shall die.
9It will happen that if ten men remain in one house, they will die.
10But a remnant shall be left behind, and their relations shall take them, and shall strenuously endeavour to carry forth their bones from the house: and one shall say to the heads of the house, Is there yet [any one] else with thee?And he shall say, No [one] else. And [the other] shall say, Be silent, that thou name not the name of the Lord.
10“When a man’s relative carries him, even he who burns him, to bring bodies out of the house, and asks him who is in the innermost parts of the house, Is there yet any with you?And he says, No;’ then he will say, ‘Hush! Indeed we must not mention Yahweh’s name.
11For, behold, the Lord commands, and he will smite the great house with breaches, and the little house with rents.
11For, behold, Yahweh commands, and the great house will be smashed to pieces, and the little house into bits.
12Will horses run upon rocks? will they refrain from neighing at mares? for ye have turned judgment into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness:
12Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness,
13ye who rejoice at vanity, who say, Have we not possessed horns by our own strength?
13you who rejoice in a thing of nothing, who say, ‘Haven’t we taken for ourselves horns by our own strength?
14Forbehold, O house of Israel, I will raise up against you a nation, saith the Lord of hosts; and they shall afflict you so that ye shall not enter into Æmath, and as it were [from] the river of the wilderness.
14For, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, house of Israel,” says Yahweh, the God of Armies; and they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of the Arabah.
1Thus has the Lord God shewed me; and, behold, a swarm of locusts coming from the east; and, behold, one caterpillar, king Gog.
1Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: behold, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s harvest.
2And it came to pass when he had finished devouring the grass of the land, that I said, Lord God, be merciful; who shall raise up Jacob ? for he is small in number.
2When they finished eating the grass of the land, then I said, Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.
3Repent, O Lord, for this. And this shall not be, saith the Lord.
3Yahweh relented concerning this. “It shall not be,” says Yahweh.
4Thus has the Lord shewed me; and, behold, the Lord called for judgment by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and devoured the Lord's portion.
4Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me: behold, the Lord Yahweh called for judgment by fire; and it dried up the great deep, and would have devoured the land.
5Then I said, O Lord , cease, I pray thee: who shall raise up Jacob ? for he is small in number. Repent, O Lord, for this.
5Then I said, Lord Yahweh, stop, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.
6This also shall not be, saith the Lord .
6Yahweh relented concerning this. “This also shall not be,” says the Lord Yahweh.
7Thus the Lord shewed me; and behold, he stood upon a wall of adamant, and in his hand [was] an adamant.
7Thus he showed me: behold, the Lord stood beside a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.
8And the Lord said to me, What seest thou, Amos? And I said, An adamant. And the Lord said to me, Behold, I appoint an adamant in the midst of my people Israel: I will not pass by them any more.
8Yahweh said to me, Amos, what do you see? I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, Behold, I will set a plumb line in the middle of my people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more.
9And the joyful altars shall be abolished, and the sacrifices of Israel shall be set aside; and I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
9The high places of Isaac will be desolate, the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
10Then Amasias the priest of Bæthel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos is forming conspiracies against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land will be utterly unable to bear all his words.
10Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos has conspired against you in the middle of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.
11For thus says Amos , Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall be led away captive from his land.
11For Amos says, Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.’”
12And Amasias said to Amos, Go, seer, remove thou into the land of Juda, and live there , and thou shalt prophesy there:
12Amaziah also said to Amos, “You seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there,
13but thou shalt no longer prophesy at Bæthel: for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is the royal house.
13but don’t prophesy again any more at Bethel; for it is the kings sanctuary, and it is a royal house!”
14And Amos answered , and said to Amasias, I was not a prophet, nor the son of a prophet; but I was a herdman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruits.
14Then Amos answered Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son, but I was a herdsman, and a farmer of sycamore figs;
15And the Lord took me from the sheep, and the Lord said to me, Go, and prophesy to my people Israel.
15and Yahweh took me from following the flock, and Yahweh said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.
16And now hear the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, Prophesy not to Israel, and raise not a tumult against the house of Jacob.
16Now therefore listen to Yahweh’s word: ‘You say, Don’t prophesy against Israel, and don’t preach against the house of Isaac.
17Therefore thus saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be a harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be measured with the line; and thou shalt die in an unclean land; and Israel shall be led captive out of his land. Thus has the Lord God shewed me.
17Therefore Yahweh says: ‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by line; and you yourself shall die in a land that is unclean, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.’”
