1These are the names of the sons of Israel that came into Egypt together with Jacob their father; they came in each with their whole family.
1Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob):
2Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Judas,
2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
3Issachar, Zabulon, Benjamin,
3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4Dan and Nephthalim, Gad and Aser.
4Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5But Joseph was in Egypt. And all the souls [born] of Jacobwere seventy-five.
5All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already.
6And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

9And he said to his nation, Behold, the race of the children of Israel is a great multitude, and is stronger than we:
9He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.
10come then, let us deal craftily with them, lest at any time they be increased, and whensoever war shall happen to us, these also shall be added to our enemies, and having prevailed against us in war, they will depart out of the land.
10Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”
11And he set over them task-masters, who should afflict them in their works; and they built strong cities for Pharao, both Pitho, and Ramesses, and On, which is Heliopolis.
11Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.
12But as they humbled them, by so much they multiplied, and grew exceedingly strong; and the Egyptians greatly abhorred the children of Israel.
12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel.
13And the Egyptians tyrannised over the children of Israel by force.
13The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,
14And they embittered their life by hard labours, in the clay and in brick-making, and all the works in the plains, according to all the works, wherein they caused them to serve with violence.
14and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.
15And the king of the Egyptians spoke to the midwivesof the Hebrews; the name of the one was , Sepphora; and the name of the second, Phua.
15The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,
16And he said, When ye do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and they are about to be delivered, if it be a male, kill it; but if a female, save it.
16and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”
17But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt appointed them; and they saved the male children alive.

18And the king of Egypt called the midwives, and said to them, Why is it that ye have done this thing, and saved the male children alive?

19And the midwives said to Pharao, The Hebrew women are not as the women of Egypt, for they are delivered before the midwives go in to them. So they bore children.
19The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”
20And God did well to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very strong.

21And as the midwives feared God, they established for themselves families.

22And Pharao charged all his people, saying, Whatever male [child] shall be born to the Hebrews, cast into the river; and every female, save it alive.

1And there was a certain man of the tribe of Levi, who took to wife one of the daughters of Levi .

2And she conceived, and bore a male child; and having seen that he was fair, they hid him three months.
2The woman conceived and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.
3And when they could no longer hide him, his mother took for him an ark, and besmeared it with bitumen, and cast the child into it, and put it in the ooze by the river.
3When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.
4And his sister was watching from a distance, to learn what would happen to him.

5And the daughter of Pharao came down to the river to bathe; and her maids walked by the river's side, and having seen the ark in the ooze, she sent her maid, and took it up.
5Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to get it.
6And having opened it, she sees the babe weeping in the ark: and the daughter of Pharao had compassion on it, and said, This [is one] of the Hebrews' children.
6She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
7And his sister said to the daughter of Pharao, Wilt thou that I call to thee a nurse of the Hebrews, and shall she suckle the child for thee?
7Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”
8And the daughter of Pharao said , Go: and the young woman went, and called the mother of the child.
8Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” The young woman went and called the child’s mother.
9And the daughter of Pharao said to her, Take care of this child , and suckle it for me, and I will give thee the wages; and the woman took the child, and suckled it.
9Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” The woman took the child, and nursed it.
10And when the boy was grown, she brought him to the daughter of Pharao, and he became her son; and she called his name, Moses, saying, I took him out of the water.
10The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
11And it came to pass in that length of time, that Moses having grown , went out to his brethren the sons of Israel: and having noticed their distress, he sees an Egyptian smiting a certain Hebrewof his brethren the children of Israel.
11In those days, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his brothers and saw their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.
12And having looked round this way and that way, he sees no one; and he smote the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

13And having gone out the second day he sees two Hebrew men fighting; and he says to the injurer, Wherefore smitest thou thy neighbour?
13He went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?”
14And he said, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? wilt thou slay meas thou yesterday slewest the Egyptian? Then Moses was alarmed, and said, If [it be] thus, this matter has become known.
14He said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?” Moses was afraid, and said, “Surely this thing is known.”
15And Pharao heard this matter, and sought to slay Moses; and Moses departed from the presence of Pharao, and dwelt in the land of Madiam; and having come into the land of Madiam, he sat on the well.
15Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.
16And the priest of Madiam had seven daughters, feeding the flock of their father Jothor; and they came and drew water until they filled their pitchers, to water the flock of their father Jothor.

17And the shepherds came, and were driving them away; and Moses rose up and rescued them, and drew water for them, and watered their sheep.

18And they came to Raguel their father; and he said to them, Why have ye come so quickly to-day?
18When they came to Reuel, their father, he said, “How is it that you have returned so early today?”
19And they said, An Egyptian delivered us from the shepherds, and drew water for usand watered our sheep.
19They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.”
20And he said to his daughters, And where is he? and why have ye left the man? call him therefore, that he may eat bread.
20He said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”
21And Moses was established with the man, and he gave Sepphora his daughter to Moses to wife.
21Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.
22And the woman conceived and bore a son, and Moses called his name Gersam, saying, I am a sojourner in a strange land.
22She bore a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”
23And in those days after a length of time, the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel groaned because of their tasks, and cried, and their cry because of their tasks went up to God .
23In the course of those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.
24And God heard their groanings, and God remembered his covenant made with Abraam and Isaacand Jacob.
