1And the people murmured sinfully before the Lord; and the Lord heard [them] and was very angry; and fire was kindled among them from the Lord, and devoured a part of the camp.
1The people were complaining in the ears of Yahweh. When Yahweh heard it, his anger burned; and Yahweh’s fire burned among them, and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.
2And the people cried to Moses: and Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire was quenched.
2The people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to Yahweh, and the fire abated.
3And the name of that place was called Burning; for a fire was kindled among them from the Lord.
3The name of that place was called Taberah, because Yahweh’s fire burned among them.
4And the mixed multitude among them lusted exceedingly; and they and the children of Israel sat down and wept and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
4The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly; and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, “Who will give us meat to eat?
5We remember the fish, which we ate in Egypt freely; and the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the garlic, and the onions.
5We remember the fish, which we ate in Egypt for nothing; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic;
6But now our soul is dried up; our eyes [turn] to nothing but to the manna .
6but now we have lost our appetite. There is nothing at all except this manna to look at.”
7And the manna is as coriander seed, and the appearance of it the appearance of hoarfrost.
7The manna was like coriander seed, and it looked like bdellium.
8And the people went through the field, and gathered , and ground it in the mill, or pounded it in a mortar, and baked it in a pan, and made cakes of it; and the sweetness of it was as the taste [of] wafer made with oil.
8The people went around, gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it. Its taste was like the taste of fresh oil.
9And when the dew came upon the camp by night, the manna came down upon it.
9When the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it.
10And Moses heard them weeping by their families, every one in his door: and the Lord was very angry; and the thing was evil in the sight of Moses .
10Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and Yahweh’s anger burned greatly; and Moses was displeased.
11And Moses said to the Lord, Why hast thou afflicted thy servant, and why have I not found grace in thy sight, that thou shouldest lay the weight of this people upon me?
11Moses said to Yahweh, “Why have you treated your servant so badly? Why haven’t I found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me?
12Have I conceived all this people, or have I born them? that thou sayest to me, Take them into thy bosom, as a nurse would take her suckling, into the land which thou swarest to their fathers?
12Have I conceived all this people? Have I brought them out, that you should tell me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which you swore to their fathers’?
13Whence have I flesh to give to all this people? for they weep to me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.
13Where could I get meat to give all these people? For they weep before me, saying, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat.’
14I shall not be able to bear this people alone, for this thing is too heavy for me.
14I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.
15And if thou doest thus to me , slay me utterly, if I have found favour with thee, that I may not see my affliction.
15If you treat me this way, please kill me right now, if I have found favor in your sight; and don’t let me see my wretchedness.”
16And the Lord said to Moses, Gather me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom thou thyself knowest that they are the elders of the people, and their scribes; and thou shalt bring them to the tabernacle of witness, and they shall stand there with thee.
16Yahweh said to Moses, “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you.
17And I will go down, and speak there with thee; and I will take of the spirit that is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear together with thee the burden of the people , and thou shalt not bear them alone.
17I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit which is on you, and will put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you don’t bear it yourself alone.
18And to the people thou shalt say, Purify yourselves for the morrow, and ye shall eat flesh; for ye wept before the Lord, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: and the Lord shall allow you to eat flesh, and ye shall eat flesh.
18“Say to the people, ‘Sanctify yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, and you will eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of Yahweh, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.” Therefore Yahweh will give you meat, and you will eat.
19Ye shall not eat one day, nor two , nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days;
19You will not eat just one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days,
20ye shall eat for a full month, until [the flesh] come out at your nostrils; and it shall be nausea to you, because ye disobeyed the Lord, who is among you, and wept before him, saying, What had we to do to come out of Egypt?
20but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome to you; because you have rejected Yahweh who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we come out of Egypt?”’”
21And Moses said, The peopleamong whom I amare six hundred thousand footmen; and thou saidst, I will give them flesh to eat, and they shall eat a whole month.
21Moses said, “The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and you have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat a whole month.’
22Shall sheep and oxen be slain for them, and shall it suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, and shall it suffice them?
22Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to be sufficient for them? Shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to be sufficient for them?”
23And the Lord said to Moses, Shall not the hand of the Lord be fully sufficient? now shalt thou know whether my word shall come to pass to thee or not.
23Yahweh said to Moses, “Has Yahweh’s hand grown short? Now you will see whether my word will happen to you or not.”
24And Moses went out, and spoke the words of the Lord to the people ; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and he set them round about the tabernacle.
24Moses went out, and told the people Yahweh’s words; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them around the Tent.
25And the Lord came down in a cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the seventy men that were elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied and ceased.
25Yahweh came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.
26And there were two men left in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Modad; and the spirit rested upon them, and these were of the number of them that were enrolled, but they did not come to the tabernacle; and they prophesied in the camp.
26But two men remained in the camp. The name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad; and the Spirit rested on them. They were of those who were written, but had not gone out to the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp.
27And a young man ranand told Moses, and spoke, saying, Eldad and Modad prophesy in the camp.
27A young man ran, and told Moses, and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!”
28And Joshua the son of Naue, who attended on Moses, the chosen one , said, [My] lord Moses, forbid them.
28Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his chosen men, answered, “My lord Moses, forbid them!”
29And Moses said to him, Art thou jealous on my account? and would that all the Lord's people were prophets; whenever the Lord shall put his spirit upon them.
29Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all Yahweh’s people were prophets, that Yahweh would put his Spirit on them!”
30And Moses departed into the camp, himself and the elders of Israel.
30Moses went into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.
31And there went forth a wind from the Lord, and brought quails over from the sea; and it brought them down upon the campa day's journey on this side, and a day's journey on that side, round about the camp, as it were two cubits from the earth.
31A wind from Yahweh went out and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day’s journey on this side, and a day’s journey on the other side, around the camp, and about two cubits above the surface of the earth.
32And the people rose up all the day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered quails; he that gathered least, gathered ten measures; and they refreshed themselves round about the camp.
32The people rose up all that day, and all of that night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails. He who gathered least gathered ten homers; and they spread them all out for themselves around the camp.
33The flesh was yet between their teeth, before it failed, when the Lord was wroth with the people, and the Lord smote the people with a very great plague.
33While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, Yahweh’s anger burned against the people, and Yahweh struck the people with a very great plague.
34And the name of that place was called the Graves of Lust; for there they buried the people that lusted.
34The name of that place was called Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who lusted.
35The people departed from the Graves of Lust to Aseroth; and the people halted at Aseroth.
35From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth; and they stayed at Hazeroth.
1And Mariam and Aaron spoke against Moses, because of the Ethiopian woman whom Moses took; for he had taken an Ethiopian woman.
1Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Cushite woman.
2And they said, Has the Lord spoken to Moses only ? has he not also spoken to us? and the Lord heard it.
2They said, “Has Yahweh indeed spoken only with Moses? Hasn’t he spoken also with us?” And Yahweh heard it.
3And the man Moses was very meek beyond all the men that were upon the earth.
3Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all the men who were on the surface of the earth.
4And the Lord said immediately to Moses and Aaronand Mariam, Come forth all three of you to the tabernacle of witness.
4Yahweh spoke suddenly to Moses, to Aaron, and to Miriam, “You three come out to the Tent of Meeting!” The three of them came out.
5And the three came forth to the tabernacle of witness; and the Lord descended in a pillar of a cloud, and stood at the door of the tabernacle of witness; and Aaron and Mariam were called; and both came forth.
5Yahweh came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the door of the Tent, and called Aaron and Miriam; and they both came forward.
6And he said to them, Hear my words: If there should be of you a prophet to the Lord, Iwill be made known to him in a vision, and in sleep will I speak to him .
6He said, “Now hear my words. If there is a prophet among you, I, Yahweh, will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak with him in a dream.
7My servant Moses [is] not so; he is faithful in all my house.
7My servant Moses is not so. He is faithful in all my house.
8I will speak to him mouth to mouth apparently, and not in dark speeches; and he has seen the glory of the Lord; and why were ye not afraid to speak against my servantMoses?
8With him, I will speak mouth to mouth, even plainly, and not in riddles; and he shall see Yahweh’s form. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses?”
9And the great anger of the Lord [was] upon them, and he departed.
9Yahweh’s anger burned against them; and he departed.
10And the cloud departed from the tabernacle; and, behold, Mariam was leprous, [white] as snow; and Aaron looked upon Mariam, and, behold, she [was] leprous.
10The cloud departed from over the Tent; and behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. Aaron looked at Miriam, and behold, she was leprous.
11And Aaron said to Moses, I beseech thee, my lord, do not lay sin upon us, for we were ignorant wherein we sinned.
11Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, please don’t count this sin against us, in which we have done foolishly, and in which we have sinned.
12Let her notbe as it were like death, as an abortion coming out of his mother's womb, when [the disease] devours the half of the flesh.
12Let her not, I pray, be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb.”
13And Moses cried to the Lord, saying, O God, I beseech thee, heal her.
13Moses cried to Yahweh, saying, “Heal her, God, I beg you!”
14And the Lord said to Moses, If her father had only spit in her face, would she not be ashamed seven days? let her be set apart seven days without the camp , and afterwards she shall come in .
14Yahweh said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, shouldn’t she be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut up outside of the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.”
15And Mariam was separated without the camp seven days; and the people moved not forward till Mariam was cleansed.
15Miriam was shut up outside of the camp seven days, and the people didn’t travel until Miriam was brought in again.
16And afterwards the people set forth from Aseroth, and encamped in the wilderness of Pharan.
16Afterward the people traveled from Hazeroth, and encamped in the wilderness of Paran.
