1After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth.
2saying,
2Job answered:
3Let the day perish in which I was born, and that night in which they said, Behold a man-child!
3“Let the day perish in which I was born, the night which said, ‘There is a boy conceived.’
4Let that night be darkness, and let not the Lord regard it from above , neither let light come upon it.
4Let that day be darkness. Don’t let God from above seek for it, neither let the light shine on it.
5But let darkness and the shadow of death seize it; let blackness come upon it;
5Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let all that makes the day black terrify it.
6let that day and night be cursed, let darkness carry them away; let itnot come into the days of the year, neither let it be numbered with the days of the months.
6As for that night, let thick darkness seize on it. Let it not rejoice among the days of the year. Let it not come into the number of the months.
7But let that night be pain, and let not mirth come upon it, nor joy.
7Behold, let that night be barren. Let no joyful voice come therein.
8But let him that curses that day curse it , [even] he that is ready to attack the great whale.
8Let them curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up leviathan.
9Let the stars of that night be darkened; let it remain [dark], and not come into light; and let it not see the morning star arise:
9Let the stars of its twilight be dark. Let it look for light, but have none, neither let it see the eyelids of the morning,
10because it shut not up the gates of my mother's womb, for [so] it would have removed sorrow from my eyes.
10because it didn’t shut up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor did it hide trouble from my eyes.
11For why died I not in the belly? and [why] did I not come forth from the womb and die immediately?
11“Why didn’t I die from the womb? Why didn’t I give up the spirit when my mother bore me?
12And why did the knees support me? and why did I suck the breasts?
12Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breast, that I should nurse?
13Now I should have lain down and been quiet, I should have slept and been at rest,
13For now I should have lain down and been quiet. I should have slept, then I would have been at rest,
14with kings [and] councillors of the earth, who gloried in [their] swords;
14with kings and counselors of the earth, who built up waste places for themselves;
15or with rulers, whose gold was abundant, who filled their houses with silver:
15or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver;
16or [I should have been] as an untimely birth proceeding from his mother's womb, or as infants who never saw light.
16or as a hidden untimely birth I had not been, as infants who never saw light.
17There the ungodly have burnt out the fury of rage; there the wearied in body rest.
17There the wicked cease from troubling. There the weary are at rest.
18And the men of old time have together ceased to hear the exactor's voice .
18There the prisoners are at ease together. They don’t hear the voice of the taskmaster.
19The small and great are there, and the servant that feared his lord.
19The small and the great are there. The servant is free from his master.
20For why is light given to those who are in bitterness, and life to the souls which are in griefs?
20“Why is light given to him who is in misery, life to the bitter in soul,
21who desire death, and obtain it not, digging [for it] as [for] treasures;
21who long for death, but it doesn’t come; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,
22and would be very joyful if they should gain it?
22who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?
23Death [is] rest to [such] a man , for God has hedged him in.
23Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?
24For my groaning comes before my food, and I weep being beset with terror.
24For my sighing comes before I eat. My groanings are poured out like water.
25For the terror of which I meditated has come upon me, and that which I had feared has befallen me.
25For the thing which I fear comes on me, that which I am afraid of comes to me.
26I was not at peace, nor quiet, nor had I rest; yet wrath came upon me.
26I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither do I have rest; but trouble comes.”
1Then Eliphaz the Thæmanite answered and said,
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
2Hast thou been often spoken to in distress? but who shall endure the force of thy words?
2“If someone ventures to talk with you, will you be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?
3For whereas thou hast instructed many, and hast strengthened the hands of the weak one,
3Behold, you have instructed many, you have strengthened the weak hands.
4and hast supported the failing with words , and hast imparted courage to feeble knees .
4Your words have supported him who was falling, you have made the feeble knees firm.
5Yet now [that] pain has come upon thee, and touched thee, thou art troubled.
5But now it has come to you, and you faint. It touches you, and you are troubled.
6Is not thy fear [founded] in folly, thy hope also, and the mischief of thy way?
6Isn’t your piety your confidence? Isn’t the integrity of your ways your hope?
7Remember then who has perished, being pure? or when were the true-hearted utterly destroyed?
7“Remember, now, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?
8Accordingly as I have seen men ploughing barren places, and they that sow them will reap sorrows for themselves.
8According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble, reap the same.
9They shall perish by the command of the Lord, and shall be utterly consumed by the breath of his wrath.
9By the breath of God they perish. By the blast of his anger are they consumed.
10The strength of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the exulting cry of serpents are quenched.
10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11The old lion has perished for want of food, and the lions' whelps have forsaken one another.
11The old lion perishes for lack of prey. The cubs of the lioness are scattered abroad.
12But if there had been any truth in thy words, none of these evils would have befallen thee. Shall not mine ear receive excellent [revelations] from him?
12“Now a thing was secretly brought to me. My ear received a whisper of it.
13But [as when] terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night,
13In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
14horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake.
14fear came on me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake.
15And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered.
15Then a spirit passed before my face. The hair of my flesh stood up.
16I arose and perceived it not: I looked, and there was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, [saying],
16It stood still, but I couldn’t discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes. Silence, then I heard a voice, saying,
17What, shall a mortal be pure before the Lord? or a man be blameless in regard to his works?
17‘Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?
18Whereas he trusts not in his servants, and perceives perverseness in his angels .
18Behold, he puts no trust in his servants. He charges his angels with error.
19But [as for] them that dwell in houses of clay, of whom we also are formed of the same clay, he smites them like a moth.
19How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth!
20And from morning to evening they no longer exist: they have perished, because they cannot help themselves.
20Between morning and evening they are destroyed. They perish forever without any regarding it.
21For he blows upon them, and they are withered: they have perished for lack of wisdom.
21Isn’t their tent cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.’
